Futile and Potentially Inappropriate Interventions: Semantics Matter

Abstract

Recently, five major critical care professional organizations in North America and Europe published a consensus policy statement on how intensive care unit clinicians should respond to patient or surrogate requests for potentially inappropriate treatments. Subsequently, the Society for Critical Care Medicine, the largest multidisciplinary critical care organization and one of the authors of the Multiorganization Policy Statement, issued a companion statement defining futile and potentially inappropriate interventions.
