Abstract
This dissertation is an examination of arguments which support present obligations to future generations, with particular attention given to the work of Derek Parfit on future generations. ;Chapter I is a review of arguments regarding obligations to future generations as these have developed since 1968. Chapter II is a detailed presentation of Parfit's work on future generations as it is found in his book Reasons and Persons. ;In Chapter III various critiques of Parfit's work are examined for their acceptance and resolution of the paradoxes which Parfit formulates regarding future generations. The final chapter, Chapter IV, evaluates four ethical methods for their ability to ground present obligation to future generations. This dissertation concludes that a composite principle of duty and affection, in accord with the requirements of practical reasoning, overcomes limitations of other theories in establishing the bases for present obligations to future generations
