Abstract

Is it possible to think music without endorsing the traditional metaphysical and subjectivist views (music either as the essence of the world or as the language of human passions), and yet without chosing a merely mathematical approach? After having shown that both Schopenhauer and Nietzsche have failed to do so (although for opposite reasons), this paper explores possible answers through a phenomenological understanding of music that draws upon Heidegger's hermeneutical ontology and his definition of Stimmung
