Abstract

Attributing beliefs to others, and to school pupils in particular is a matter of interpretation, rather than the discovery of an absolute psychological state. We report beliefs in words, but children can have substantial beliefs that they cannot express. This has implications for educational assessment. For instance, children might have beliefs they express by means of interacting with software, but which they could not put into words.
