The influence of American pragmatism of John Dewey in school full-time in Brazil

Abstract

This article is the result of a literature that discusses the philosophical thought of John Dewey about the pragmatist ideas, which formed the basis for the Brazilian educational thought from the New Education Pioneers Movement of 1932. Therefore, the design current comprehensive education in the country guided a new direction for the school’s role in Brazilian reality, opposite to the challenges of society today. Structured in three moments of reflection, this study initially brings the foundation school full-time, according to the thought of John Dewey; then establishes connections between the ideas of Dewey and the Manifesto of the New Education Pioneers in Brazil and, finally, presents some nice contributions of school full time. Thus, this study contributes to the debate of ideas of integral education in Dewey’s view, situated to the contemporary reality of school in Brazil. Besides pointing in official documents the organization and operation of the school full-time, as a significant part of the educational policies in the Brazilian context.
