Abstract

In numerous articles and reviews, Gabriel Marcel advanced stimulating and still relevant ideas on the complex relationship between the listener and the musical work. He made a fundamental distinction between hearing and understanding music. He analyzed in some detail the notions of musical idea and musical presence. The purpose of this paper is to present Marcel’s original views on the chief elements of our experience of classical music. It also seeks to highlight some of the benefits of active music making for our life today
