Abstract
This study investigated the literature of Discipline-based Art Education with regard to its curricular and theoretical antecedents. This examination revealed that DBAE did not adopt any single theory of art as central to its development. The fact that DBAE does not subscribe to a particular theory of art is problematic to its rationale and objectives. ;Some art educators have suggested that any sound art curricula should evolve from artistic theory. In order to select a theory of art that could adequately account for conceptually-dense artworks, this study also investigated theories of art that have been advanced since 1960. Danto's philosophy of art, as presented in his text The Transfiguration of the Commonplace , was chosen for an in-depth analysis. His theory of art, particularly his claims about artistic form, was utilized as the foundation for development of art-educational curricula in accordance with the DBAE structure
