A sacred code: Mormon Temple dedications, 1836-2000

Abstract

This paper presents a statistical content analysis of the temple dedication prayers of the first one hundred Latter-day Saint temples. The most prominent changes over the approximately 150 years represented are the abbreviation and codification of prayers. The formalization process, spearheaded by church president Gordon B. Hinckley, has separated the prayers somewhat from their nineteenth-century origins while making them more consistent with other Latter-day Saint ritual prayers.
