Metamorphosis: On the Conflict of Human Development and the Development of Creativity.Ernest G. Schachtel - 1959 - Routledge.
First published in 1959, _Metamorphosis_ remains one of the great works of developmental psychology of the past century. From his thoughtful meditation on the assumptions of classical Freudian psychoanalysis, among them the pleasure and reality principles, the relations of drive and affect, and the nature and causes of infantile amnesia, Schachtel moves on to profound reflections on the senses considered both in terms of their evolving relation to one another during maturation and as variable ingredients in the perception and (...)

Zum Begriff und zur Diagnose der Persönlichkeit in den „Personality Tests“.Ernst Schachtel - 1937 - Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung 6 (3):597-624.
This article is a critical analysis of personality tests. It analyzes the methods used in diagnosing personality and investigates the concept of personality which is implied in them. The conduct of such tests is described and their relationship to psychotechnics and behaviorism indicated. Their claim to precision in the understanding of personality is tested and it is demonstrated that the object of this knowledge is not the structure of the personality but only certain superficial aspects of human behavior. In fact, (...)

Comfort and Dis-ease: The Problem of Anxiety.Joseph Wilson - 2009 - Dialogue: Journal of Phi Sigma Tau 51 (2-3):87-92.
The concept of mental disease has broadened considerably in the last few years. Many mental states that were not previously considered problematic now fall under the category of disease. The most notable example is anxiety. Anxiety disorders are the most prevalently treated mental disease. The current social and psychiatric authorities emphasize the negativity of the affective state and recommend methods by which the state can be avoided. The problem with these approaches is that they do not recognize the functional role (...)

Pioneers of Interpersonal Psychoanalysis.Donnel B. Stern, Carola Mann, Stuart Kantor & Gary Schlesinger (eds.) - 1995 - Routledge.
This volume brings together 14 classic papers by interpersonal pioneers. Collectively, these papers not only demonstrate the coherence and explanatory richness of interpersonal psychoanalysis; they anticipate the emphasis on relational patterns and analyst-analysand interaction that typifies much recent theorizing. Each paper receives a substantial introduction from a leading contemporary interpersonalist. The pioneers of interpersonal psychoanalysis are: H. Sullivan, F. Fromm-Reichmann, J. Rioch, C. Thompson, R. Crowley, E. Schachtel, E. Tauber, E. Fromm, H. Bone, E. Singer, D. Schecter, J. Barnett, (...)

Metamorphosis. On the Development of Affect, Perception, Attention, and Memory. [REVIEW]H. K. - 1960 - Review of Metaphysics 13 (4):704-704.
The author seeks to shed light on the changes in man from infant to adult. He rejects Freud's notion of the pleasure principle, arguing that the infant also turns to and enjoys the excitations of the world; on the other hand "ego psychology" is charged with neglecting the developmental factor. In going beyond these views Schachtel makes his contribution to a fuller understanding of the human situation. A clear and well-written book.--K. H.
