Bellezza e piacere. La fatica del giudizio estetico in qualche pagina medievale.Maria Tilde Bettetini - 2018 - Aisthesis. Pratiche, Linguaggi E Saperi Dell’Estetico 11 (1):7-12.
Through some pages of Augustine of Hippo and Thomas Aquinas we see some medieval solutions to the platonic drama of a beauty defined by numbers and measures, however with suprasensible roots: how can we say beautiful what cannot be measured? If Beauty is Harmony and Proportion, consequently how can it derive from a suprasensible beauty? How will it be possible to express aesthetic judgments that go beyond measurement? The medieval answers to these questions are far beyond the postmodern uncertainties, maintaining (...)

    The size of $\tilde{T}$.Paul Larson - 2000 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 39 (7):541-568.
Given a stationary subset T of $\omega_{1}$ , let $\tilde{T}$ be the set of ordinals in the interval $(\omega_{1}, \omega_{2})$ which are necessarily in the image of T by any embedding derived from the nonstationary ideal. We consider the question of the size of $\tilde{T}$ , givenT, and use Martin's Maximum and $\mathbb{P}_{max}$ to give some answers.

Effective Bounds from ineffective proofs in analysis: An application of functional interpretation and majorization.Ulrich Kohlenbach - 1992 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 57 (4):1239-1273.
    We show how to extract effective bounds Φ for $\bigwedge u^1 \bigwedge v \leq_\gamma tu \bigvee w^\eta G_0$ -sentences which depend on u only (i.e. $\bigwedge u \bigwedge v \leq_\gamma tu \bigvee w \leq_\eta \Phi uG_0$ ) from arithmetical proofs which use analytical assumptions of the form \begin{equation*}\tag{*}\bigwedge x^\delta\bigvee y \leq_\rho sx \bigwedge z^\tau F_0\end{equation*} (γ, δ, ρ, and τ are arbitrary finite types, η ≤ 2, G0 and F0 are quantifier-free, and s and t are closed terms). Pointwise hereditary majorization and some applications.Ulrich Kohlenbach - 1992 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 31 (4):227-241.
A pointwise version of the Howard-Bezem notion of hereditary majorization is introduced which has various advantages, and its relation to the usual notion of majorization is discussed. This pointwise majorization of primitive recursive functionals (in the sense of Gödel'sT as well as Kleene/Feferman's ) is applied to systems of intuitionistic and classical arithmetic (H andH c) in all finite types with full induction as well as to the corresponding systems with restricted inductionĤ↾ andĤ↾c.H and Ĥ↾ are closed under a generalized (...)

    Computable shuffle sums of ordinals.Asher M. Kach - 2008 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 47 (3):211-219.
    The main result is that for sets ${S \subseteq \omega + 1}$ , the following are equivalent: The shuffle sum σ(S) is computable.The set S is a limit infimum set, i.e., there is a total computable function g(x, t) such that ${f(x) = \lim inf_t g(x, t)}$ enumerates S.The set S is a limitwise monotonic set relative to 0′, i.e., there is a total 0′-computable function ${\tilde{g}(x, t)}$ satisfying ${\tilde{g}(x, t) \leq \tilde{g}(x, t+1)}$ such that ${{\tilde{f}(x) (...)

The extended dual-aspect monism framework of consciousness, based on neuroscience, consists of five components: (1) dual-aspect primal entities; (2) neural-Darwinism: co-evolution and co-development of subjective experiences (SEs) and associated neural-nets from the mental aspect (that carries the SEs/proto-experiences (PEs) in superposed and unexpressed form) and the material aspect (mass, charge, spin and space-time) of fundamental entities (elementary particles), respectively and co-tuning via sensorimotor interaction; (3) matching and selection processes: interaction of two modes, namely, (a) the non-tilde mode that is (...)

  16. A fundamental link between system theory and statistical mechanics.H. Atmanspacher & H. Scheingraber - 1987 - Foundations of Physics 17 (9):939-963.
A fundamental link between system theory and statistical mechanics has been found to be established by the Kolmogorov entropy K. By this quantity the temporal evolution of dynamical systems can be classified into regular, chaotic, and stochastic processes. Since K represents a measure for the internal information creation rate of dynamical systems, it provides an approach to irreversibility. The formal relationship to statistical mechanics is derived by means of an operator formalism originally introduced by Prigogine. For a Liouville operator L (...)

On characterizing solution for multi-objective fractional two-stage solid transportation problem under fuzzy environment.Hamiden Abd El-Wahed Khalifa, Pavan Kumar & Majed G. Alharbi - 2021 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 30 (1):620-635.
This article attempts to study cost minimizing multi-objective fractional solid transportation problem with fuzzy cost coefficients c ˜ i j k r {\tilde{c}}_{ijk}^{r}, fuzzy supply quantities a ˜ i {\tilde{a}}_{i}, fuzzy demands b ˜ j {\tilde{b}}_{j}, and/or fuzzy conveyances e ˜ k {\tilde{e}}_{k}. The fuzzy efficient concept is introduced in which the crisp efficient solution is extended. A necessary and sufficient condition for the solution is established. Fuzzy geometric programming approach is applied to solve the crisp (...)

Negative Größen bei Diophant? Teil I.Klaus Barner - 2007 - NTM Zeitschrift für Geschichte der Wissenschaften, Technik und Medizin 15 (1):18-49.
In this paper which consists of two parts (Teil I and Teil II) we champion Diophantus of Alexandria and Isabella Bašmakova against Norbert Schappacher. In two publications ([Schappacher 1998a] and [Schappacher 1998b]) he puts forward inter alia two propositions: Questioning Diophantus’ originality he considers affirmatively the possibility that the Arithmetica are the joint work of a team of authors like Bourbaki. And he calls Bašmakova’s claim (in [Bašmakova 1972]) that Diophantus uses negative numbers, a nonsense , reproaching her for her (...)

Will and Sacrifice: Victimary Representations in Ibsen's Rosmersholm.Raffaella Colombo - 2012 - Contagion: Journal of Violence, Mimesis, and Culture 19:167-177.
In his short essay, “Some Character-Types Met With in Psycho-Analytic Work,” published in 1916 in the review Imago, Freud identifies Ibsen’s drama Rosmersholm (1886) as a perfect example of an Oedipus complex in a modern setting. The story is well known. After the suicide of his wife Beata, brought about by the impossibility of bearing children and by the misery of an existence sacrificed to social and religious duties, John Rosmer, a Protestant pastor, has lost his old faith and (...)

An elegant but “simple” form for the Dirac hydrogen atom.James D. Edmonds - 1978 - Foundations of Physics 8 (1-2):123-129.
The operator structures for the constants of the motion of the relativistic hydrogen atom are examined. ThoughJ 3 andJ · J are constants of the motion,J is not. Its replacement, $\tilde {\rm K}$ , is shown to emerge rather naturally in transforming the equation to spherical coordinates. The separation of variables is presented in hypercomplex number form. This leads to some interesting suggestions regarding the matter/antimatter operator for the Dirac equation.

This paper deals with Gärdenfors’ theory of conceptual spaces. Let \({\mathcal {S}}\) be a conceptual space consisting of 2-type fuzzy sets equipped with several kinds of metrics. Let a finite set of prototypes \(\tilde{P}_1,\ldots,\tilde{P}_n\in \mathcal {S}\) be given. Our main result is the construction of a classification algorithm. That is, given an element \({\tilde{A}}\in \mathcal {S},\) our algorithm classifies it into the conceptual field determined by one of the given prototypes \(\tilde{P}_i.\) The construction of our algorithm (...)

What happens to the inner light of consciousness with the death of the individual body and brain? Reductive materialism assumes it simply fades to black. Others think of consciousness as indicating a continuation of self, a transformation, an awakening or even alternatives based on the quality of life experience. In this issue, speculation drawn from theoretic research are presented. -/- Table of Contents Epigraph: From “The Immortal”, Jorge Luis Borges iii Editor’s Introduction: I Killed a Squirrel the Other Day, Gregory (...)

Let ${\mathfrak{M}}$ be a nonstandard model of Peano Arithmetic with domain M and let ${n \in M}$ be nonstandard. We study the symmetric and alternating groups S n and A n of permutations of the set ${\{0,1,\ldots,n-1\}}$ internal to ${\mathfrak{M}}$ , and classify all their normal subgroups, identifying many externally defined such normal subgroups in the process. We provide evidence that A n and S n are not split extensions by these normal subgroups, by showing that any such complement if (...)

    Experimental test of the Pauli Exclusion Principle.A. S. Barabash - 2010 - Foundations of Physics 40 (7):703-718.
A short review is given of three experimental works on tests of the Pauli Exclusion Principle (PEP) in which the author has been involved during the last 10 years. In the first work a search for anomalous carbon atoms was done and a limit on the existence of such atoms was determined, $^{12}\tilde{\mathrm{C}}$ /12C <2.5×10−12. In the second work PEP was tested with the NEMO-2 detector and the limits on the violation of PEP for p-shell nucleons in 12C were (...)

An eye-opener and a head-scratcher, this set of fifty exercices de style offers an oblique and learned introduction to a great classic of ludic literature dating from the twelfth century, the Maqamat of al-Hariri. Each of the fifty tales of the trickster Abu Zayid, some or perhaps all of which contain or are constituted by one or more formal restrictions, is here presented in the form of a pastiche of some familiar or exotic register of writing in English. We can (...)

    The mass operator in Riemannian spacetimes.Kh Huleihil & S. Malin - 1980 - Foundations of Physics 10 (5-6):459-467.
    There is no unique way to generalize the mass operator 0 2 −p · p to curved spacetimes. The possible generalizations using either an analytic or an algebraic (group-theoretic) approach are discussed. We investigate in detail three possibilities: (i) the generalized D'Alembertian $$- \tilde \square = - (1/\sqrt { - g} )(\partial /\partial x^v )(\sqrt { - g} g^{\mu v} {\text{ }}\partial /\partial x^\mu$$ (ii) the operator ( $- (\tilde \square + \tfrac{1}{6}{\text{R)}}$ , which is conformally invariant in (...)

Modified Weyl theory and extended elementary objects.W. Drechsler - 1989 - Foundations of Physics 19 (12):1479-1497.
To represent extension of objects in particle physics, a modified Weyl theory is used by gauging the curvature radius of the local fibers in a soldered bundle over space-time possessing a homogeneous space G/H of the (4, 1)-de Sitter group G as fiber. Objects with extension determined by a fundamental length parameter R0 appear as islands D(i) in space-time characterized by a geometry of the Cartan-Weyl type (i.e., involving torsion and modified Weyl degrees of freedom). Farther away from the domains (...)

Quantized fiber dynamics for extended elementary objects involving gravitation.W. Drechsler - 1992 - Foundations of Physics 22 (8):1041-1077.
The geometro-stochastic quantization of a gauge theory for extended objects based on the (4, 1)-de Sitter group is used for the description of quantized matter in interaction with gravitation. In this context a Hilbert bundle ℋ over curved space-time B is introduced, possessing the standard fiber ℋ $_{\bar \eta }^{(\rho )} $ , being a resolution kernel Hilbert space (with resolution generator $\tilde \eta $ and generalized coherent state basis) carrying a spin-zero phase space representation of G=SO(4, 1) belonging (...)
