This essay focuses on the thesis of the so-called »double truth« within the philosophical and theological milieu of the University of Altdorf during the XVIIth Century. The problem of the »double truth« that aroused in the scholastic discussions on Averroism, receives a particular form in the context of Altdorf. In fact, this unique discursive setting was inspired there by the two main tendencies that characterize that philosophical and theological milieu at that time, namely radical Paduan Aristotelism, and Lutheran (...) orthodoxy. Only apparently opposed, these two positions converge on that point. And the synthesis of these two currents of thought gives rise to an interesting justification of the paradox of the conflict »between true and true«: the development of a theory of different fields and levels of truth. Arnold Clapmarius’ ‘Traineeship in politics’. Practical Experience and the Semblance of Practical Experience as a Qualification in the Field of Political Science around the Year 1600. In 1600, Arnold Clapmarius was appointed the first professor for Public Law and Political Science in the Holy Roman Empire by the University of Altdorf. He received this professorship though he had not yet published anything because he was a protégé of Landgrave Maurice the Learned of Hesse-Kassel. Two newly discovered letters which were (...) written by Clapmarius to Maurice show that the young scholar did a traineeship at the Landgrave's court to gather practical experience in politics. This was probably the reason for his appointment in Altdorf. Nevertheless, he hushed up this traineeship because it did not comply to the kind of experience that were expected from a ‘politicus’ at that time, id est military service, educational journeys, foreign languages and regional studies. Thus, this paper fills a gap of Arnold Clapmarius’ biography, and provides a new perspective on the value of practical experience in the field of political science in the Early Modern Period. An unrecognised copy (1665) in Kant’s private library of Michael Piccart’s Isagoge (1605), an introduction to the system of Aristotelian philosophy together with Kant’s own remarks on this author (Refl 4160, AA 17, p. 439) can be established as an original source for the Kantian ‘ideosphere’. First, I point out contexts and consequences of Piccart’s Altdorfian Aristotelianism, in contrast to the Königsbergian Aristotelianism (emphasised by Tonelli’s research). To further check the quality of Piccart as a source of Kant’s, a conceptual (...) case-study is elaborated with Kant’s critical distinction between analytics as a “logic of truth” (KrV, B 85) and dialectics as a “logic of illusion” (KrV, B 86). Hereby, dialectics is understood as part of an Aristotelian division of logic in analytics, dialectics and sophistics (Königsberg/Rabe versus Altdorf/Piccart). As will be shown by the paradigmatic case of the famous Königsbergian proponent of Aristotelianism, Paul Rabe, Kant cannot have received the suggestion for his own critical distinction from Rabe’s Cursus Philosophicus. Instead, Piccart refers to a passage of Aristotle’s Metaphysics, which suggests the very distinction between an analytic philosopher who searches for scientific truth and dialecticians and sophists. In early modern times, solar eclipses were feared events that gave rise to much astrological speculation, even though these events could already be predicted long in advance. Around 1700, the situation was already different. Astrology had lost its status as a science and had largely been pushed out of the universities. On the other hand solar eclipses had become very important for cartography. From the beginning and end times of the eclipse at different locations, the differences of their geographical coordinates (...) could be calculated. The changed situation can be illustrated perfectly by the eclipses of August 12, 1654 and May 12, 1706. Whereas in 1654 there were still many astrologically influenced warnings, in 1706 there was great calm in this respect, and instead numerous astronomers tried to record the event correctly and compare their results with those of other observers. Die humanistische und frühbarocke Rezeption des Sophokles im deutschen Sprachraum ist weniger erforscht als diejenige anderer antiker Dichter. Die hier angezeigte Monographie erkundet zunächst die Wege der Aneignung und Kanonisierung der griechischen Tragödie durch die frühen Humanisten, die vornehmlich nach chrestomathischen Kriterien erfolgte. Sodann wird die dichtungstheoretische Würdigung des Sophokleischen Werks in der humanistischen Stillehre und Dramentheorie und in den frühbarocken Poetiken der Jesuiten erörtert, die das Schultheater maßgeblich beeinflußten. Der allmähliche Abbau der Sprachbarriere des Griechischen und die Rezeption der (...) Aristotelischen Poetik trugen entscheidend zur produktiven Anverwandlung der Sophokleischen Dramatik bei. Schließlich wird die Umformung der Sophokleischen Gestalten und Texte in mythologischen Handbüchern und Lexika, in Übersetzungen und in Schultheateraufführungen, etwa an den Gymnasien von Altdorf und von Straßburg, exemplarisch dargestellt. Am Vergleich mehrerer Bearbeitungen desselben Stoffes lassen sich divergierende Deutungsmuster einer von verschiedenen intellektuellen Positionen bestimmten Zeit dokumentieren. Als Höhe- und Wendepunkt dieser Entwicklung verweist Opitzens "Verteutschung" auf die stärker als bisher in der Forschung angenommenen humanistischen Wurzeln und Absichten seines Sophokles-Verständnisses, das zugleich das erste Kunstdrama in deutscher Sprache hervorbrachte.
