Now‐a‐days various discussions are taking place with regard to humanistic thought in the Islamic world of the Middle Ages. These discussions are usually related to historical academic debates on the position of Islam and Muslims within the Western context. Attention has especially been directed towards issues like human rights, justice, democracy, gender relationships, freedom of expression, and religious freedom. This chapter investigates the circumstances under which humanistic views flourished in Islam. It clarifies how these ideas developed by analysing the opinions (...) of Muslim theologians (especially those of the Mu'tazilite school) and philosophers from the Middle Ages, on the relationship between Islam and humanism. The chapter subsequently discusses the consequences of this development, particularly for the dialogue between Islam and humanism in the West. It addresses the ethical and methodological issues that emerge for discussion when humanism and Islam meet. (shrink)

This article focuses on feelings of anxiety among radical young Muslims, not just as a result of radicalism and terrorism but rather as an important cause of both. In contrast to many other publications which mainly deal with the radicalization of Muslim youths without taking into account their personal experience, the feelings of fear and anxiety expressed by radical young Muslims are central to this research. On the basis of an ongoing case study of 23 young Muslims who have participated (...) in a lengthy de-radicalization program in Amsterdam since 2009, an attempt has been made to gain insight into the interaction between radicalization processes and feelings of anxiety among this target group. The case study suggests that the three forms of anxiety expressed by radical Muslim youths, namely, fear of victimization, fear caused by guilt feelings, and fear of being controlled by hatred and revenge, are related to the three phases presented in the “staircase model to terrorism.” This research into the various forms of anxiety experienced by radical young Muslims provides a concrete starting point for the de-radicalization process. Claudins serve essential roles in regulating paracellular permeability properties within occluding junctions. Recent studies have begun to elucidate developmental roles of claudins within immature tissues. This work has uncovered an involvement of several claudins in determining tight junction properties that have an effect on embryonic morphogenesis and physiology. During zebrafish brain morphogenesis, Claudin‐5a determines the paracellular permeability of tight junctions within a transient neuroepithelial‐ventricular barrier that maintains the hydrostatic fluid pressure required for brain ventricular lumen expansion. However, the roles of (...) Claudins in development may well extend beyond being mere junctional components. Several post‐translational modifications of Claudins have been characterized that indicate a direct regulation by developmental signals. This review focuses on the involvement of Claudin‐5a in cerebral barrier formation in the zebrafish embryo and includes some speculations about possible modes of regulation. (shrink)
