Abstract

Starting from the assumption that the dialogue with Descartes might appear to be an opportunity to think for himself, the author analyzes and disallows Descartes’ recent and customary image which has come down to us. Hegel is to be primarily charged as being the responsible to tailoring such as an image, particularly when he is regarded as the modern mind’s shaper. It is established the need to face upwith the problem of thinking for himself within the frame of a new age, the so called "radical age"; where we have to reflect over the set of questions with which Descartes once were concerned. In so doing, the author proposes to reclaim both a Descartes’ up-to-date image, not necessarily modern together with the notion of "mathesis universalis" as is treated in the Regulae, without falling, however, to acknowledge that the rationalist reason has long collapsed and it can hardly be sustained in the very same way as Descartes did, though some of his claims might somehow be proved still valid.
