Abstract

The purpose of this article is to foster not only a deeper comprehension of thecriticism aimed at Richard Rorty’s political philosophy, but also to suggest a more generous reading of its qualities. The main branch of analysis will be the ideas Rorty advances in “Contingency, Irony and Solidarity – the impact of acknowledging the contingency of beliefs that support liberal-democratic values, the public-private distinction, the assumption of redescriptions as sources of moral progress – as well as the doubts they aroused. To do so, I will critically discuss objections and commentaries made by authors such as Juergen Habermas, Richard Bernstein, Nancy Fraser, Christopher Voparil, James Conant, Thomas McCarthy, among others
