Abstract

Peter F. Strawson offered in his “Social Morality and Individual Ideal” a suggestivegroup of reflections concerning the tension between ethical ideals of the individual and moral demands ofsociety. Those reflections are revisited in this paper with the support of the second Inquiry ofDavid Hume. It is argued that this work offers a clue to understand many of the problems stated byStrawson. In fact, Strawson himself adopted years later an interesting moderate naturalistic strategy withroots in Hume.
