agency, patiency and personhood action and passivity, central to agential conception of persons ‐ persons act not merely in the broad sense in which animals and machines act ‘other side’ of action ‐ passivity which action presupposes, and the sufferings which doings involve twin features of patiency ‐ that we suffer both as agents and as patients, inalienable, pervasive, and important in human social life personhood as passive being accepted in epistemology ‐ concept of ‘world’ of something given to, or inflicted upon us denial of victimhood ‐ impacting asymmetrically on two sexes capability/incapability and need ‐ equally central to agential conception of a person, focus on capability choice, rationality and freedom/constraint independence and dependency ‐ agential conception, committing us further to the idea that persons are independent need to overcome philosophical fear of passivity ‐ giving ethical recognition to each other as abject victims
