Abstract
If the song Domine, fac salvum Regem , imposed by the Concordat of 1801, was well-known, and the appointment of the sovereign in the Canon of the Mass with the prayer Pro Rege nostro was less well-known, it was likely to have had heavier implications between theology and politics due to its nature and its place in the heart of the Holy Sacrifice. In post-1789 France, this custom, a relic of the mystical union of throne and altar and the Gallican monarchy, persisted beyond the change of the regime. However, it was increasingly challenged by Catholics, uncompromising Ultramontanes, and supporters of the papal monarchy and the Roman Liturgy. Eventually, it disappeared: Bluntly defined, it was more the result of the final secularization of the state than the assertion of national sovereignty.
