TH Barrett was educated in the United Kingdom, graduating in Chinese Studies from Cambridge University in l97l, before studying East Asian Religion at Yale and in Tokyo. He returned to Cambridge in l975 to teach Chinese Studies, gaining his Yale doctorate in l978 which formed the basis for Li Ao: Buddhist, Taoist or Neo-Confucian?(l992). He left Cambridge in [Book Review]
