Abstract
Seventeen twelfth-century stained glass panels have been identified as belonging to a single series from Troyes cathedral. Because of their exquisite craftsmanship, precocious , early Gothic style, and unusual iconography, they have received much scholarly attention. Yet the attribution of the series to Troyes cathedral has not been seriously examined, despite the fact that not a single example is currently mounted in a window in the cathedral. The identification of a new twelfth-century panel in the Godwin-Ternbach Museum at Queens College, New York, and the study of the Gothic stained glass in the ambulatory chapels of Troyes cathedral have led me to question if any of the panels in the “Troyes series” ever actually belonged to the glazing of Troyes cathedral
