Abstract

A visit to Gian-Carlo Rota’s tomb, who is buried at Mount Auburn cemetery in Cambridge, inspires insight into his mathematical and philosophical genealogy. The former, ideally goes back to Von Neumann, through Stan Ulam, while the latter leads – through John Rawls and Norman Malcom – to Ludwig Wittgenstein. Such eminent names are closely linked to his intellectual heritage and his educational commitment. The paper focuses on the very wide boundaries of Rota’s research covering combinatorics, physics, computer science, industrial processes and – through phenomenology – philosophical reflection on mathematics, psychology and politics. This article is in French.
