Abstract

Seguindo um antigo conceito cosmológico de ordem, a filosofia medieval desenvolveu uma concepção peculiar: o universo seria tanto mais belo conforme contasse com maior diversidade e até com antagonismos. Essas teorias se fortaleceram graças à retórica grega — formada pela oposição de ideias — bem como pela antítese ensinada pela própria doutrina cristã, proporcionando o desenvolvimento de teses que endossam a necessidade de princípios opostos na Criação. Particularmente importante foi a concepção de harmonia — que se tornou, em grande parte, o fundamento teórico e prático dessa cosmovisão. A partir de tais elementos pretende- se neste artigo definir a presença, dentro do âmbito científico, de uma “lógica dos contrários harmônicos” no século XII. Por conseguinte, a abordagem de opostos na ordem do universo será contemplada sob dois aspectos: o cosmológico e o metafísico. /// Following an ancient cosmological concept of order, medieval philosophy developed a peculiar concept: the universe would be more beautiful to the degree that it had more diversity and even antagonisms. These theories were strengthened thanks to Greek rhetoric—formed by the opposition of ideas—as well as by the antithesis taught by Christian doctrine itself, providing the development of theses that endorsed the necessity of opposite principles in Creation. Particularly important was the conception of harmony—that became, in large part, the theoretical and practical foundation of this cosmovision. Based on these elements, this article seeks to define the presence, within the scientific ambit of a “logic of harmonic opposites” in the XII century.
