Pline, employé supérieur de l'empire romain, tantôt fonctionnaire civil, tantôt commandant militaire, comme c'était l'usage dans cet ordre de choses Pline, dis-je, avait le goût passionné des sciences; mais il ne les connaissait pas, et il les traitait en homme de let tres, non en homme de métier; pour lui, c'était matière à compilation, et, d'intervalle en intervalle, matière à quelque tirade littéraire, à quelque morceau d'éclat. M. De Humboldt est versé dans toutes les sciences; il les connaît dans leur théorie et leur pratique; il a mis la main aux choses; il compte parmi les autorités, parmi les inventeurs; et, quand il rassemble les matériaux, il ne compile pas, il choisit et coordonne.
