Between the dys-appearance and hyper-appearance: Exploring the suffering experiences of the chronic illness patients

Abstract

In this study, diabetes as an example, the physical concept of chronic diseases and control concept. The researchers interviewed sample 20 diabetes cases showed that chronic diseases of the body concept shaped structure quadruple significance, including: the body as a "life form"; the body as a "worry that care"; the body as a "moral - the body" experience; body as a "mental" of heritage. Control was significant in view of the meaning of two layers, including: "physical memory performance as a diet"; "take care of themselves and others worry reciprocity." Ontology of life with chronic illness, illness experience is to rewrite the story of life. Cases emerged from the data, not just the story of disease, more because of illness changed the life of the story. This study shows that diabetes attitudes toward the body and control concept was changed by the rub of the spindle life experiences can be interpreted from the "reverse show" to "over-presented." Sum up, qualification by the morbidity after the experience of life, patients will chronic events from a simple as a "medical files" gradually awareness to chronic diseases is also a moral career of the responsibility to choose and care for action, so chronic is a "social event." The research is taken the diabetes as the example to discusses chronic illness patients' body experience and sense of control. Multiple semi-structured interviews with twenty patients at a care site in northern Taiwan were conducted and transcribed. The narrative data were analyzed through interpretative phenomenology. Four superordinate themes emerged from the analysis as the following. 1. The body as the life form. 2. Body attendance means the worrying as the caring processes. 3. The body is endorsed with the moral- somatic experience. 4. The body as the spiritual meaning. The senses of control for the patients included two meanings as following.1. The diet is one kind of bodily memories. 2. It is manifested the dialectical relationships between caring for others and self -care. What the changes for the chronic illness patients is the ontological meaning, their life stories are constructed through the suffering experiences. The life trajectory is transformed from the dys-appearance to hyper-appearance. Through the long term suffering psychophysiological experiences, the patients are aware of the factuality meaning. The chronic illness is not only meant the disease event, it is also meant the moral career. The patients learn how to take responsibility to care themselves and act ethically. For the patients, the chronic illness was constructed as a social event, but it was also a complicated incident beyond the comprehension of the bio-medical model
