Abstract

Dignity has long been a “hidden” notion: without being explicitly expressed, it has inspired the recognition of many rights. In the end, it is the case law, rather than legislation, that has expressly recognized a principle of human dignity, particularly in the field of biomedicine. However, the strength of this principle coupled with the ambiguity of the notion itself present real risks, especially regarding fundamental freedoms.
