Historical fencing and scientific research medieval weapons: common ground

Abstract

The article examines societies of historical fencing to study the technical and tactical characteristics of medieval bladed weapons, considered differences of principles and methods of studying medieval battle by the participants of HEMA and historical reconstruction clubs that are common, particularly in Ukraine. Argued proved that direction, which develops HEMA, opens more prospects for researcher’s medieval martial art. Currently the study arms in Ukrainian historical science is mostly theoretical include researchers analyze archaeological, iconographic and written sources. However, Western Scientific’s works are increasingly focused on the practical aspect. They are characterized not only a description of species and types of armament specific to a particular time band, but analysis manuals on warfare, studying the experience of weapons possession based on modern reconstructions. We considered various approaches to the reconstruction of the historical fencing. It is proved that the activities of such societies has a positive effect on the process research of features of medieval weapons, fighting tactics of different periods The various approaches to the reconstruction of the historical fencing.
