Abstract

All those interested in the field of education will find this book fascinating, instructive, and thought-provoking. Gill presents a comprehensive reflection on learning. Prior to discussing the quality of education in America, or considering issues of pedagogy and curriculum, Gill seeks to develop a philosophy of education that is critically based in an investigation of the nature of human knowing. The first part of the book works to identify a more adequate philosophy of education, one based on a "postcritical" examination of the nature of human knowing. The second part of the book searches out a theory of learning that should inform any philosophy or system of education. The third part renders a model of learning that can suggest appropriate programs, pedagogies, and curriculum.
