Abstract

Este artigo procura caracterizar o pensamento levinasiano a partir da relaçãoentre cultura e civilização. Parte da hipótese segundo a qual existe, de acordocom vários textos do filósofo, uma tensão – que jamais encontra síntese –entre a particularidade das culturas e a universalidade da civilização. Talrelação é fundamental para se entender o conceito de ética no filósofo francês.This article aims at characterizing Levinas’ thought based on the relationshipbetween culture and civilization. It starts from the hypothesis according towhich there is – as it stands out in several texts of the philosopher – anendless tension between what is particular in the different cultures and whatis universal in civilization. This relationship is fundamental to understand Levinas’ concept of ethics
