Some considerations on transcendence in Spinoza’s metaphysics

Abstract

This essay underlines some aporias rising from a radically immanentist interpretation of Spinoza’s thought. According to the author, Spinozian immanence cannot be understood as a levelling of the ontological differences of substance, attributes and modes, in which the Deus sive Natura internally articulates itself: it is better understood as an internal unfolding of the effects of substance. Therefore Spinoza’s system shows itself as a deductive system which, by means of ontological differences, retains the transcendence both of the substance over the attributes and of the attributes over the infinite and finite modes. This reading of Spinoza’s metaphysics is closely related to the theory of the analogy of Being
