Abstract

Although Wilhelm Dilthey admitted his religious scepticism frequently, he faced the question of religion developing some ideas coming out in a psychology of religion. Dilthey’s position within the theological debate of the late 19th century is set forth in order to show the influence of the Vermittlungtheologen and that of Friedrich Schleiermacher’s theology on his education and his intellectual evolution. These elements are highlighted as central ones for the science of religion of the 20th century
