Abstract

This chapter will explore the imagination of collective futures through literature and collective action. Defining imagination by how it provides a unique perspective on potential futures in an ambiguous world, the chapter will discuss how literature also provides perspectives on social norms and future-oriented thinking. Two case studies will be presented as examples under which social change has emerged as a result of literature. The Jungle will show how imagination can create cognitive dissonance, which needed to be resolved. The Harry Potter Alliance case study will examine how framing real-world issues in terms of imaginary constructs from literature can mobilize collective action. The chapter will conclude by noting both the limits of collective imagination, but also the power that literature can provide in making change.
