Abstract

Excerpt from The Witness of Art: Or the Legend of Beauty The first issue of "The Witness of Art" appeared without a Preface because the Author desired that his purpose should be gathered from the book itself, rather than from any preliminary statement which could not be otherwise than incomplete. And now that a Second Edition is called for, any such statement seems still more unnecessary. So much has been written about the book, and the Reviewers have, with very few exceptions, so faithfully interpreted its meaning to the public, that the Author is content to send it out once more, as he did at first, to speak for itself. He is not ungrateful, however, for the generous reception that has been given to his work. More than sixty notices lie before him as he writes these words, while nearly half the volume has been quoted in various journals.
