In this article I claim that the genetic revolution, that is, the advent of a series of highly transformative and disruptive genetic technologies, will happen in the coming years. Given the importance of this historical event, I argue that we must think in advance about the socio-ethical dynamics this revolution could entail. To do this, I first explore the ways in which this genetic revolution might unfold, and the socio-ethical problems it will face. Then, I describe possible social dynamics that (...) will appear in a post genetic revolution scenario, using the example of Ecuador, a multiethnic society that had an abrupt social and genetical transformation that could resemble in some ways what the genetic revolution might bring. En este artículo argumento que el empleo de tecnologías biomédicas para la mejora moral es inadecuado para evitar riesgos globales, debido a que puede provocar problemas similares a los que se pretenden resolver por medio de su uso. Por este motivo, defiendo la conveniencia de explorar otras tecnologías para la mejora moral que no supongan tantos peligros y argumento en favor de un modelo de mejora moral por medio de la inteligencia artificial. En concreto, defiendo el empleo de SocrAI, un (...) asistente moral artificial diseñado para mejorar nuestra deliberación moral. Para ello, propongo tres criterios que permitan evaluar y aumentar su seguridad y eficacia. Asimismo, señalo la importancia de tener en cuenta las cuestiones estructurales e institucionales —i. e., las normas o los incentivos políticos, económicos, sociales y culturales— en las propuestas de mejora moral, y muestro cómo SocrAI puede tener impacto en ellas. Los intentos de mejorar al ser humano parten de la suposición de que es posible lograr algo más perfecto que lo que somos actualmente. Sin embargo, no en todos los casos se plantea cuál es el objetivo último al que tienden las acciones de mejora. Si lo que se produce no es el logro de un rango óptimo, sino un proceso ilimitado de mejora continua, se abre un interrogante sobre cómo se altera la identidad de los individuos, qué consecuencias tendría (...) ese proceso de reconstrucción y qué significa hablar del ser humano cuando las características que lo definen se pueden alterar a voluntad. Igualmente, cabe preguntarse cuál es el espacio de libertad de elección que queda a los individuos, cómo se ve comprometida la autonomía de los progenitores en las decisiones sobre sus hijos y en qué medida la mejora se convierte en una exigencia que obliga a realizar modificaciones para lograr una humanidad mejor. Al llibre ¿Què ens fa humans? (2022), Salvador Macip explora la pregunta del títol a través d’un diàleg fructífer entre la ciència i la filosofia. Ara bé, Macip diu que no està interessat en tota la filosofia, sinó només en «la part de la filosofia que ha aplicat el mètode científic » (p. 159). A quina part de la filosofia fa referència exactament? Repassarem les idees principals del llibre de Macip fent especial esment dels filòsofs que es mencionen. Així, podrem (...) tenir una idea més precisa de quina mena de filosofia és la que interessa a Macip. També revisarem breument les referències artístiques incloses al llibre de Macip, ja que el mateix autor afirma que «ciència i art no s’haurien de veure com dues entitats separades (i gairebé antagòniques) […], sinó com components del mateix concepte, el de la cultura humana» (p. 35). When discussing genetic prenatal enhancement, we often encounter objections related to “eugenics.” Those who want to defend prenatal enhancement either try to avoid using the term “eugenics” or talk about “liberal eugenics”, implying that what was wrong with the old eugenics was its coercive character, and claiming that while old eugenics went against reproductive freedom, the new liberal eugenics promotes freedom. In this paper we first explore the objection that genetic enhancement is a form of eugenics that limits parental freedom. (...) We then show how the same objection appears in other bioethical debates. Finally, we answer the objection, showing that genetic enhancement does not limit reproductive freedom in any important sense. Estas páginas abordan de nuevo algunas de las complejidades irreductibles del problema filosófico de la violencia (su delimitación teológico-política y su eventual uso), aprovechando la reciente edición crítica en inglés de Peter Fenves y Julia Ng del clásico ensayo de Walter Benjamin Zur Kritik der Gewalt (Hacia la crítica de la violencia) (1921), publicada en el centenario del texto original alemán. Partiendo de este contexto eminentemente filológico, nos gustaría mostrar cómo, en este ensayo, la verdadera y antagónica intimidad entre la (...) llamada «no violencia» (una política de puros medios) y la «doctrina de la no acción» (una inversión taoísta de la moral kantiana) se determina a través de una crítica lógica del pacifismo (como dogmático, contradictorio, metafísico, «un teorema más remoto»). La crítica de Benjamin también se cristaliza a través de una lectura excepcional y abisal del mandamiento divino de la Torá: «No matarás» (Ex 20, 13). (shrink)

According to political minimalism, a debate is considered political when it revolves around the question “What shall we do?” This account suggests that certain issues related to human enhancement technologies (HETs), which have traditionally been addressed in the realm of applied ethics, could be better approached from a political standpoint. However, this raises the question of who constitutes the “we” – the communities that face the political challenges posed by HETs. We argue that there is a global human community that (...) directly faces at least some of these challenges, and this fact underscores the relevance of a cosmopolitan perspective. While some authors have already advocated for a cosmopolitan approach in addressing issues such as poverty or climate change, they often do so from a moral outlook, without adequately distinguishing between ethics and politics. In contrast, we assert that HETs present compelling arguments in favour of cosmopolitanism as a political stance. In support of this claim, we consider two cases: the pills that would allow people to eat at will without gaining weight, and the choice between different types of cognitive enhancers. (shrink)

The prospect of human genetic enhancement requires an institutional response, and probably the creation of new institutions. The governance of genetic enhancement technologies, moreover, needs to be global in scope. In this article, I analyze the debate on the global governance of human genetic enhancement. I begin by offering a philosophical justification for the need to adopt a global framework for governance of technologies that would facilitate the improvement of non-pathological genetic traits. I then summarize the main concrete proposals that (...) have recently emerged to govern genome editing at the global level. Finally, I develop some impediments that limit the impetus for global governance of genetic enhancement. (shrink)
