Mediante as relações de sentido que possam existir entre as temáticas do corpo, representação e morte, sobretudo nas produções que se utilizam do suporte da fotografia, e também pensando no ponto de mudança entre o documento fotográfico para a mestiçagem da arte contemporânea, o presente artigo se propõe refletir sobre a produção de três artistas visuais: Rosângela Rennó, Christian Boltanski e YdessaHendeles. Os referidos artistas se utilizaram de práticas mestiças e do suporte fotográfico em suas produções visuais, de modo que, (...) através de um olhar mais aprofundado sobre suas obras, seja possível identificar parcialmente a forma como estabeleceram um diálogo entre a representação do corpo morto e a arte contemporânea.Palavras-chave: Fotografia. Minimal Semantics asks what a theory of literal linguistic meaning is for - if you were to be given a working theory of meaning for a language right now, what would you be able to do with it? Emma Borg sets out to defend a formal approach to semantic theorising from a relatively new type of opponent - advocates of what she call 'dual pragmatics'. According to dual pragmatists, rich pragmatic processes play two distinct roles in linguistic comprehension: as well (...) as operating in a post-semantic capacity to determine the implicatures of an utterance, they also operate prior to the determination of truth-conditional content for a sentence. That is to say, they have an integral role to play within what is usually thought of as the semantic realm. Borg believes dual pragmatic accounts constitute the strongest contemporary challenge to standard formal approaches to semantics since they challenge the formal theorist to show not merely that there is some role for formal processes on route to determination of semantic content, but that such processes are sufficient for determining content. Minimal Semantics provides a detailed examination of this school of thought, introducing readers who are unfamiliar with the topic to key ideas like relevance theory and contextualism, and looking in detail at where these accounts diverge from the formal approach. Borg's defence of formal semantics has two main parts: first, she argues that the formal approach is most naturally compatible with an important and well-grounded psychological theory, namely the Fodorian modular picture of the mind. Then she argues that the main arguments adduced by dual pragmatists against formal semantics - concerning apparent contextual intrusions into semantic content - can in fact be countered by a formal theory. The defence holds, however, only if we are sensitive to the proper conditions of success for a semantic theory. Specifically, we should reject a range of onerous constraints on semantic theorizing (e.g., that it answer epistemic or metaphysical questions, or that it explain our communicative skills) and instead adopt a quite minimal picture of semantics. O presente artigo apresenta a carnavalização proposta por Warat ao adotar a obra A Ciência Jurídica e seus dois maridos como marco de seu estilo narrativo e polifônico, multiplicador de metáforas, com vistas a revelar e superar o paradigma moderno dominante, representado pelo normativismo jurídico no campo do Direito. Para tanto, se reproduzem metáforas waratianas de modelos epistemológicos opostos mas complementares e se traça um paralelo com o duelo de modernidades. In asserting something I incur certain kinds of liabilities, including a responsibility for the truth of the content I express. If I say ‘After leaving the EU, the UK will take back control of c. £350 million per week’, or I tell you that ‘The number 14 bus stops at the British Museum’, I become liable for the truth of these claims. As my audience, you could hold me unreliable or devious if it turns out that what I said is (...) false. Yet this socio-linguistic practice – of acquiring and ascribing ‘linguistic liability’ – is complicated, especially given philosophical distinctions between the various different kinds of contents people can express (am I liable, for instance, for the claim that the number 14 bus stops at the British Museum today or only usually?). This paper explores the different kinds of contents speakers might be taken to express, arguing that our practices around linguistic liability (including in legal disputes) reveal a crucial role for a notion of context-independent, literal meaning attaching to words and sentences. These practices thus vindicate what philosophers tend to term ‘minimal semantic content’. (shrink)

What is Religion? What is religious community? How religion is seen today? Is religion relevant nowadays? And what do people pray for? This article intends to make a brief analysis of the relevance of religion before actual problems. Therefore, the method used is the case study taken in a Social Project that welcomes children who were victims of abuse.

Both patients and clinicians frequently report problems around communicating and assessing pain. Patients express dissatisfaction with their doctors and doctors often find exchanges with chronic pain patients difficult and frustrating. This chapter thus asks how we could improve pain communication and thereby enhance outcomes for chronic pain patients. We argue that improving matters will require a better appreciation of the complex meaning of pain terms and of the variability and flexibility in how individuals think about pain. We start by examining (...) the various accounts of the meaning of pain terms that have been suggested within philosophy and suggest that, while each of the accounts captures something important about our use of pain terms, none is completely satisfactory. We propose that pain terms should be viewed as communicating complex meanings, which may change across different communicative contexts, and this in turn suggests that we should view our ordinary thought about pain as similarly complex. We then sketch what a view taking seriously this variability in meaning and thought might look like, which we call the “polyeidic” view. According to this view, individuals tacitly occupy divergent stances across a range of different dimensions of pain, with one agent, for instance, thinking of pain in a much more “bodycentric” kind of way, while another thinks of pain in a much more "mindcentric” way. The polyeidic view attempts to expand the multidimensionality recognised in, e.g., biopsychosocial models in two directions: first, it holds that the standard triumvirate— dividing sensory/cognitive/affective factors— needs to be enriched in order to capture important distinctions within the social and psychological dimensions. Second, the polyeidic view attempts to explain (at least in part) why modulation of experience by these social and psychological factors is possible in the first place. It does so by arguing that because the folk concept of pain is complex, different weightings of the different parts of the concept can modulate pain experience in a variety of ways. Finally, we argue that adopting a polyeidic approach to the meaning of pain would have a range of measurable clinical outcomes. (shrink)

Das Hastings Center ist ein interdisziplinäres Forschungszentrum, gegründet 1969 von dem Philosophen Daniel Callahan und dem Psychiater Willard Gaylin in Hastings-on-Hudson in New York. Jonas schrieb zwischen dem Ende der 1960er bis zur ersten Hälfte der 1980er Jahre verschiedene Abhandlungen zum Thema und präsentierte diese auch auf (...) einigen Kongressen, sowohl in Englisch als auch auf Deutsch. O artigo defende a hipótese de que a atual supervisão de ensino do sistema público estadual paulista apresenta, contraditoriamente, uma cultura de administração centrada em práticas autoritárias, fiscalizadoras e reprodutoras de políticas públicas emanadas dos órgãos centrais hegemônicos e ao mesmo tempo, implementa no seu nível de atuação, ações diferenciadas e críticas, comprometidas com a emancipação social dos agentes envolvidos. Como forma de ruptura e superação do atual paradigma de administração educacional e, em consequência de ação supervisora, apresenta novas diretrizes (...) éticas. This work supports the hypothesis that, the actual educational supervision of the public educational policies in the Stat of São Paulo shows the contradiction of the administration culture based on authoritarian, examined and reproductive practices of the public policy derived from central bodies, and, at the same time, improves, in its acting level, special and critical actions, committed to the social emancipation of the involved agents. As a way of rupture and overcoming of the present paradigmatic of the educational administration and management, and as a result of the educational supervision, one suggests requirements to build new ethical rules to the educational supervision. In short, this work shows the educational supervision of the historical myths and their contraction with the possible identity for emancipation. (shrink)

Vardanyan’s Theorems [36, 37] state that $\mathsf {QPL}(\mathsf {PA})$ —the quantified provability logic of Peano Arithmetic—is $\Pi ^0_2$ complete, and in particular that this already holds when the language is restricted to a single unary predicate. Moreover, Visser and de Jonge [38] generalized this result to conclude that it is impossible to computably axiomatize the quantified provability logic of a wide class of theories. However, the proof of this fact cannot be performed in a strictly positive signature. The system $\mathsf (...) {QRC_1}$ was previously introduced by the authors [1] as a candidate first-order provability logic. Here we generalize the previously available Kripke soundness and completeness proofs, obtaining constant domain completeness. Then we show that $\mathsf {QRC_1}$ is indeed complete with respect to arithmetical semantics. This is achieved via a Solovay-type construction applied to constant domain Kripke models. As corollaries, we see that $\mathsf {QRC_1}$ is the strictly positive fragment of $\mathsf {QGL}$ and a fragment of $\mathsf {QPL}(\mathsf {PA})$. (shrink)

Este artigo discute a competência em informação frente ao plágio no meio acadêmico. Reflete sobre as causas do plágio, como o pouco incentivo para que estudantes produzam conteúdos autorais e a ausência de políticas institucionais que orientem tais produções. Como resposta a este contexto, o artigo sugere uma educação para a autoria a partir da competência em informação. A competência em informação, entre outros, promove uma relação saudável entre as pessoas e o universo informacional. Assim, o objetivo é discutir de (...) que forma a promoção da competência em informação contribui para o combate ao plágio acadêmico e a constituição da autoria. O método envolve levantamento bibliográfico em bases de dados da área de Ciência da Informação e construção argumentativa na qual os conceitos de plágio e competência em informação são relacionados. Os resultados incluem um guia demonstrativo de como a competência em informação pode ser empregada na produção de trabalhos acadêmicos e orientações para professores reconhecerem e evitarem o plágio. O trabalho conclui que as competências geradas no âmbito da relação entre indivíduos e informação podem beneficiar a construção de autoria e ser um elemento eficaz no combate ao plágio. (shrink)

Há muita discussão sobre como interpretar o papel do argumento ‘Saber ou não Saber’ em Teeteto 188a-c. Alguns intérpretes supõem que esse papel é dialético e Platão não está comprometido com sua verdade. Outros pensam que o argumento revela a confusão de Platão sobre o tema da opinião falsa à época do Teeteto. Em minha análise, há uma terceira via que faz mais justiça ao que Platão está desenvolvendo em 188a-c. Penso que em 188a-c temos uma versão do princípio platônico (...) da infalibilidade. (shrink)

Cultuursociologisch essay over de postchristelijke manieren waarop mensen lijden compenseren.

Este artigo apresenta reflexões sobre o letramento literário a partir da recepção da obra O olho de vidro do meu avô, de Bartolomeu Campos de Queirós, por meio da análise de depoimentos de leitores comuns – a literatura no cotidiano dos indivíduos - e de trechos de artigos científicos sobre a obra – a literatura no campo acadêmico. Apresentamos também uma sequência didática desenvolvida com alunos do 6º ano do Ensino Fundamental de uma escola pública de Itabirito, interior de Minas (...) Gerais, a partir da recepção do livro. Para a realização da prática pedagógica, usamos a proposta sugerida e experienciada por Rildo Cosson para o letramento literário, denominada pelo pesquisador como “Sequência Básica”, composta por quatro etapas: motivação, introdução, leitura e interpretação. Dessa forma, procuramos compreender a literatura, a leitura literária e o letramento literário na vida social e na escola, pois cabe a essa instituição proporcionar aos alunos experiências que desenvolvam essa competência para o letramento literário, a se perpetuar pela vida adulta. O principal objetivo desse processo no contexto escolar é formar um leitor que aprecie significações estéticas, capaz de se inserir em uma comunidade que faça suas próprias escolhas literárias, que saiba manipular seus instrumentos culturais e possa construir com eles um sentido para si e para o mundo em que vive. Dessa forma, é necessário reconhecer a importância de atividades que abarquem diferentes tipos de materiais escritos, mas que não sejam negligenciados os textos literários, multiplicando, dessa forma, os espaços de leitura e constituindo comunidades de leitores na escola e fora dela. Traditional approaches in healthcare have been challenged giving way to broader forms of users’ participation in treatment. In this article we present the Health 2.0 movement as an example of relational and participatory practices in healthcare. Health 2.0 is an approach in which participation is the major aim, aspiring to reshape the system into more collaborative and less hierarchical relationships. We offer two illustrations in order to discuss how Health 2.0 is related and can contribute to a positive uptake of (...) patient’s knowledge, which implies challenging healthcare practices exclusively focused on scientific expertise. In contrast, the illustrations we discuss focus on relations and cultural practices, searching for responsive and context-sensitive interventions, entertaining multiple views and allowing space for creativity. Finally we introduce two relational resources to contribute with the development and sustainability of Health 2.0 practices: Relational being and edge of fluidity. Those are resources aiming to engage professionals in a type of conversation with their clients, which is different from the hierarchical, linear and fact-oriented approach. This conversation aims at creating a space where the voices of all involved are welcomed, raising different opinions and points of view, bringing up new light and possibilities to the problem being investigated. These resources may be useful for those who are interested in improving quality in healthcare by investing in collaboration, contextual sensitivity and relational engagement. (shrink)

Bioethics, neuroscience, medicine are contributing to a debate on the definition and criteria of death. This topic is very controversial, and it demonstrates clashing views on the meaning of human life and death. Official medical and legal positions agree upon a biological definition of death as irreversible cessation of integrated functioning of the organism as a whole, and whole-brain criterion to ascertain death. These positions have to face many criticisms: some scholars speak of logical and practical inconsistency, some others of (...) invalid scientific theory about the supreme integrator. In this paper some criticisms are exposed and discussed in order to reconstruct the state of the art in bioethical debate. -/- . (shrink)

I criteri neurologici per accertare il decesso, da impiegare in alternativa a quelli cardiorespiratori se il paziente ha subìto lesioni cerebrali e si trova collegato alle apparecchiature per la ventilazione artificiale, sono entrati nell’uso comune della pratica medica occidentale da circa quarant’anni ed il consenso di cui essi godono nella comunità scientifica sembra, a prima vista, essere ancora oggi molto solido. Si diceva a prima vista, perché se si esamina con attenzione la letteratura dal 1992 ad oggi, si possono scoprire (...) i crescenti numeri del dissenso: ripensamenti e critiche provengono soprattutto da esperti di area medico-biologica, che associano le loro voci a quelle di filosofi, teologi, studiosi di etica. I motivi del dissenso sono molteplici, e l’ampia letteratura che li documenta riguarda la teoria scientifica posta a fondamento dei criteri neurologici, ed evidenzia le contraddizioni, teoriche ed applicative, derivanti dall’uso di quei criteri. Sintesi delle tappe attraverso cui si è giunti alla formulazione di una teoria a sostegno dei criteri neurologici e alla loro introduzione nella prassi medico-legale per individuare le cause di un ripensamento critico dei fondamenti teorico-scientifici addotti per giustificare i criteri neurologici utilizzati per dichiarare la morte di pazienti con lesioni cerebrali collegati alle apparecchiature per la ventilazione artificiale.

Analisi dei significati della locuzione "diritto di morire" nelle sue accezioni di diritto di porre termine alla propria vita e diritto di ricevere assistenza ed accompagnamento alla morte.

This paper explores the issue of dying with dignity in relation with euthanasia and palliative medicine.

La cosiddetta “morte cerebrale totale”, o più correttamente “morte encefalica” (whole brain death), è un criterio fisiologico riferito alla cessazione irreversibile e permanente di tutte le funzioni dell’encefalo (emisferi e tronco encefalico), ed è correlato alla cessazione del funzionamento integrato dell’organismo. L’applicazione del criterio neurologico, e degli esami che lo accompagnano, è finalizzato ad una diagnosi clinica e strumentale per individuare una condizione causata da lesioni neurologiche diffuse e responsabili di coma, assenza di coscienza, di respirazione spontanea, di risposte agli (...) stimoli esterni, e di attività elettrica cerebrale in pazienti collegati alle macchine per la rianimazione. La diagnosi consente la dichiarazione legale di morte. L’assunto scientifico alla base dell’impiego del criterio neurologico è la teoria dell’integratore centrale, secondo la quale l’encefalo è responsabile del funzionamento integrato e coordinato dell’organismo. Questo contributo ricostruisce a grandi linee il dibattito bioetico italiano sui criteri per l’accertamento della morte, prestando attenzione anche ai recenti sviluppi della discussione sui mass media. Bioart is an artistic experience that relates art, science and biotechnology by examining the concepts of life, evolution and nature from a new point of view. The revolutionary idea at the basis of this experience is the use of living organic matter as an expressive medium, handled with techniques which are made possible by the latest scientific and technological breakthroughs. Bioart aims at allowing a broader public the understanding and discussion of the problems related to activities that shape the relationship (...) between man and biotechnology, in order to explore the concerns that those activities arise. The article describes some selected works produced by international bioartists, with the intent to provide an analysis of bioethical and cultural implications of a phenomenon that shows many contradictions. Analisi dei principali temi della riflessione bioetica italiana.

Sono discusse le principali argomentazioni medico-biologiche che costituiscono il nucleo della teoria secondo la quale la morte cerebrale totale corrisponde alla morte dell'essere umano. Speciale attenzione è riservata alla normativa che disciplina l’applicazione dei criteri per l'accertamento di morte e alle critiche che hanno mostrato come attualmente la teoria che fa da sostegno a quella normativa sia stata radicalmente messa in discussione.

Nel quarantesimo anniversario della pubblicazione del rapporto di Harvard, ricordato da un editoriale di Lucetta Scaraffia sull’ “Osservatore Romano” il 3 settembre 2008, la riflessione sui criteri neurologici per accertare il decesso è sembrata giungere finalmente all’attenzione del pubblico italiano, dopo i dibattiti avviati nello scorso decennio in Gran Bretagna, Germania, Giappone e negli Stati Uniti. Per alcuni giorni sulle pagine dei quotidiani nazionali si sono alternate repliche, più o meno indignate, a quell’articolo e prese di posizione; poi, come è (...) d’uso, le luci si sono spente ed il sipario è ancora una volta calato su una problematica neppure scalfita dalla ribalta giornalistica. -/- In questa sede intendiamo chiarire come la discussione sull’uso dei criteri neurologici per determinare il decesso non sia frutto di un mero dissenso filosofico o teologico (impressione che un frettoloso lettore di quotidiani potrebbe avere ricevuto) sul significato della morte e dell’essere morto; il ripensamento dei fondamenti teorico-scientifici addotti per giustificare l’impiego di quei criteri è stato originato da evidenze empiriche, delle quali proprio dei medici sono stati testimoni.
