When is a conclusion worth deriving? We claim that a conclusion is worth deriving to the extent that it is relevant in the sense of relevance theory (Sperber & Wilson, 1995). To support this hypothesis, we experiment with ''indeterminate relational problems'' where we ask participants what, if anything, follows from premises such as A is taller than B, A is taller than C . With such problems, the indeterminate response that nothing follows is common, and we explain why. We distinguish (...) several types of determinate conclusions and show that their rate is a function of their relevance. We argue that by appropriately changing the formulation of the premises, the relevance of determinate conclusions can be increased, and the rate of indeterminate responses thereby reduced. We contrast these relevance-based predictions with predictions based on linguistic congruence. (shrink)

But less is known about the factors that guide these representational and inferential processes. What premises are actually taken as input in reasoning? And what conclusions are intended? In this paper it is argued that considerations of relevance are helpful for addressing these issues as a pragmatic analysis of two sorts of tasks is carried out, Wason’s 2-4-6 problem and a conditional (...) reasoning problem . Study 1 indicates that the way this task is communicated may encourage participants to consider misleading information as highly relevant for solving it. Two experiments go on to show that when the relevance of misleading information is contextually diminished, participants are more efficient at providing the correct solution. Study 2 compares the production rate of two sorts of conclusions: logically valid but weakly relevant conclusions and invalid but relevant and pragmatically justified conclusions. This study shows that the relevance of conclusions determines to a large extent whether or not they will be produced. (shrink)

Researchers currently working on relational reasoning typically argue that mental model theory (MMT) is a better account than the inference rule approach (IRA). They predict and observe that determinate (or one-model) problems are easier than indeterminate (or two-model) problems, whereas according to them, IRA should lead to the opposite prediction. However, the predictions attributed to IRA are based on a mistaken argument. The IRA is generally presented in such a way that inference rules only deal with determinate relations and not (...) with indeterminate ones. However, (a) there is no reason to presuppose that a rule-based procedure could not deal with indeterminate relations, and (b) applying a rule-based procedure to indeterminate relations should result in greater difficulty. Hence, none of the recent articles devoted to relational reasoning currently presents a conclusive case for discarding IRA by using the well-known determinate vs indeterminate problems comparison. Johnson-Laird & Byrne (1991; 1993) present a theory of human deductive reasoning based on the notion of mental models. Unfortunately, the theory is incomplete. The present commentary argues that pragmatic considerations, particularly of the type discussed in Sperber and Wilson (1995), can complement the theory.

Peng and Nisbett put forward an influential theory of the influence of culture on the resolution of contradiction. They suggested that Easterners deal with contradiction in a dialectical manner, trying to reconcile opposite points of view and seeking a middle-way. Westerners, by contrast, would follow the law of excluded middle, judging one side of the contradiction to be right and the other to be wrong. However, their work has already been questioned, both in terms of replicability and external validity. Here (...) we test alternative interpretations of two of Peng and Nisbett’s experiments and conduct a new test of their theory in a third experiment. Overall, the Eastern and Western participants behaved similarly, failing to exhibit the cross-cultural differences observed by Peng and Nisbett. Several interpretations of these failed replications and this failed new test are suggested. Together with previous failed replications, the present results raise questions about the breadth of Peng and Nisbett’s interpretation of cross-cultural differences in dealing with contradiction. Developmental research suggests that young children tend to value dominant individuals over subordinates. This research, however, has nearly exclusively been carried out in Western cultures, and cross-cultural research among adults has revealed cultural differences in the valuing of dominance. In particular, it seems that Japanese culture, relative to many Western cultures, values dominance less. We conducted two experiments to test whether this difference would be observed in preschoolers. In Experiment 1, preschoolers in France and in Japan were asked to identify (...) with either a dominant or a subordinate. French preschoolers identified with the dominant, but Japanese preschoolers were at chance. Experiment 2 revealed that Japanese preschoolers were more likely to believe a subordinate than a dominant individual, both compared to chance and compared to previous findings among French preschoolers. The convergent results from both experiments thus reveal an early emerging cross-cultural difference in the valuing of dominance. (shrink)

This paper explores the impact of group affiliation with respect to the on-line processing and appreciation of jokes, using facial electromyography activity and offline evaluations as dependent measures. Two experiments were conducted in which group affiliation varied between the participant and each of two independent speakers whose described political profiles were distinguished through one word: “Right” versus “Left.” Experiment 1 showed that jokes were more highly evaluated and that associated EMG activity was more intense when it was later determined that (...) the speaker was a member of the listener’s ingroup rather than outgroup. In an effort to determine whether these parochial effects can be isolated to ingroup favoritism as opposed to outgroup derogation, Experiment 2 paired a joke-teller described as politically active with one who was described as politically neutral. These more subtle comparisons suggest that the parochial effects observed in our joke understanding paradigm are mediated, at least in part, by the presence of an outgroup member. (shrink)

In the present study, we explore how reading habits influence the scanning and the construction of mental models in spatial reasoning. For instance, when participants are given a problem like A is to the left of B; B is to the left of C, what is the relation between A and C? They are assumed to construct the model: A B C. If reading habits influence the scanning process, then readers of French should inspect models from left to right, whereas (...) readers of Arabic should inspect them from right to left. The prediction following this analysis is that readers of French should be more inclined to produce “left” conclusions, whereas readers of Arabic should be more inclined to produce “right” conclusions. Furthermore, one may expect that readers of French show a greater ease in constructing models following a left-to-right direction than models following a right-to-left direction, whereas an opposite pattern might be expected for readers of Arabic. We tested these predictions in two experiments involving French and Yemeni participants. Experiment 1 investigated the formulation of conclusions from spatial premises, and Experiment 2, which was based on non-linguistic stimuli, examined the time required to construct mental models from left to right and from right to left. Our results show clear differences between the two groups. As expected, the French sample showed a strong left-to-right bias, but the Yemeni sample did not show the reverse bias. Results are discussed in terms of cultural influences and universal mechanisms. (shrink)

Past research dedicated to the impact of hierarchy on the autonomic nervous system has focused mainly on dominance. The current study extends this investigation by assessing the effect of social prestige, operationalized through occupational status, and examines whether people react differently when interacting with individuals of high or low occupational status. Participants’ heart rate and electrodermal activity were recorded while they interacted with a confederate who was introduced either as a neurosurgeon or as a nurse aide. The results show that, (...) contrary to the participants’ skin conductance level, their heart rate was modulated by the confederate’s status. In the high-status condition, participants’ heart rate increased when the “neurosurgeon” approached them, reaching a higher level than when interacting with the person in the low-status condition. We discuss our results in terms of the threats or opportunities that prestige may elicit. (shrink)

Nous avons fait nos premiers pas, lu nos premiers livres, écrit nos premiers mots; de la même manière, nous lisons nos premiers mots philosophiques et nous les prononçons. Il en est de la philosophie comme de toute discipline intellectuelle : elle a son langage, ses mots propres, ses tournures un peu spécifiques qui peuvent, par leurs définitions, introduire aux problèmes philosophiques les plus importants. Il peut être utile d'essayer d'entrer dans la définition des termes philosophiques les plus usuels afin de (...) comprendre les questions philosophiques véhiculées par eux. Les mots étant les signes de ce que connaît l'intelligence de la réalité, ils contiennent déjà en eux toute une conception philosophique qui présente à l'esprit les divers degrés du réel. Dans le nouveau programme de Terminale du 27 mai 2003, il est demandé aux professeurs, sous la rubrique " repères ", d'initier les élèves aux questions philosophiques en proposant la signification des termes philosophiques les plus habituels, comme absolu/relatif, accidentel/ essentiel, en acte/en puissance, etc. Ce petit livre, Les premiers mots philosophiques, reprend l'ensemble des termes proposés dans ces " repères ", montrant comment, à partir des significations les plus simples" de ces termes philosophiques, l'intelligence peut s'ouvrir à la connaissance philosophique du réel, dans toute sa diversité et sa complexité. D'une certaine manière, il peut représenter comme une introduction à la philosophie, clarifiant les différents sens des mots philosophiques pour permettre, par eux, une première connaissance du réel. L'auteur, par son expérience pédagogique de trente années d'enseignement en classe Terminale, donne ainsi un " outil " pédagogique qui pourra être utile aux élèves comme aux professeurs, ainsi qu'à tous ceux qui désirent s'initier à la philosophie. L'auteur, Jean-Baptiste Echivard, est professeur de philosophie à l'Externat Sainte Marie de Lyon et à l'IPC - Facultés libres de philosophie et de psychologie. (shrink)

L’anthropologie ne cesse aujourd’hui de déconstruire les processus d’essentialisation de divers groupes sociaux dans une visée critique et politique. À la suite du tournant ontologique, certains travaux entendent désormais dépasser, dans une visée inclusive, les distinctions d’essences et les typologies d’espèces pour décrire le continuum des agency entre des existants que la modernité aurait séparés. Mais ces approches d’inspiration animiste, et que je nomme la nouvelle métaphysique en anthropologie, n’exploitent qu’une modalité possible de la relation homme-animal. À l’aune de certaines (...) pratiques Mursi, une population agro-pastorale du sud-ouest éthiopien, je présente donc une autre modalité de la relation homme-animal, agençant de manière originale les espèces humaines et bovines : bien que partageant une essence commune, il n’y a pas d’extension anthropomorphe de la subjectivité, et les bovins ne sont pas des sujets équivalents en morale ou en droit. L’anthropologie classique de l’Afrique de l’Est a associé le pastoralisme à l’idéologie masculine. Pourtant, chez les Mursi, l’implication des femmes dans la réussite pastorale est manifeste, à condition de considérer les différents âges de la vie. Les positions sociales de la Belle-mère et de l’Ancien, aboutissement d’un processus de maturation que souligne l’organisation sociale en classe d’âge, invitent ainsi à se questionner sur les rapports de genre. Ces figures permettent de comprendre en quoi certaines femmes mûres accèdent à des positions (...) sociales masculines, mais aussi en quoi ces femmes restent politiquement subordonnées aux Anciens en dernière instance, en raison d’un décalage temporel vis-à-vis de leur alter ego masculin de même âge dans l’accès à la maturité. L’article s’intéresse d’abord à l’ordre politique produit par les différences de maturité entre guerriers et anciens. D’autres types de relations cross-sex, comme celles entre jeunes filles et guerriers, sont ensuite décrites avant de circonscrire la place des Anciens et des Belles-mères vis-à-vis du groupe dans son ensemble et des troupeaux. To remain financially viable and continue to accomplish their social missions, nonprofits are increasingly adopting a hybrid organizational form that combines commercial and social welfare logics. While studies recognize that individual organizations vary in how they incorporate and manage hybridity, variation at the level of the organizational form remains poorly understood. Existing studies tend to treat forms as either hybrid or not, limiting our understanding of the different ways a hybrid form may combine multiple logics and how such combinations evolve (...) over time. Analyzing 14 years of data from Canadian nonprofits seeking funding for social enterprise activities, we identify two novel dimensions along which a hybrid form may vary—the locus of integration and the scope of logics. We further find that as the commercial logic became more widespread within the nonprofit sector, variants of the hybrid form shifted from primarily emphasizing the commercial logic to more equally emphasizing both the commercial and social welfare logics and integrating the two logics in multiple ways. Drawing on these findings, we contribute a multi-dimensional conception of hybrid forms and theorize how form-level variation in hybridity can arise from organization-level cognitive challenges that actors face when combining seemingly incompatible logics. We then build on this theorizing to offer an alternative perspective on commercialization of the nonprofit sector as a contextually dependent rather than universal trend. (shrink)

This paper examines the history of animal behavior studies after the synthesis period. Three episodes are considered: the adoption of the theory of natural selection, the mathematization of ideas, and the spread of molecular methods in behavior studies. In these three episodes, students of behavior adopted practices and standards developed in population ecology and population genetics. While they borrowed tools and methods from these fields, they made distinct uses that set them relatively apart and led them to contribute, in their (...) own way, to evolutionary theory. These episodes also highlight some limitations of “conjunction narratives” centered on the relation between a discipline and the modern synthesis. A trend in conjunction narratives is to interpret any development related to evolution in a discipline as an “extension,” an “integration,” or as a “delayed” synthesis. I here suggest that this can lead to underestimate discontinuities in the history of evolutionary biology. (shrink)

When the meta-philosophies of Nominalism and Realism are compared, it is often said that Nominalism is motivated by a methodology of ontological economy, while Realism would be motivated by an appeal to Common Sense. In this paper, I argue that this association is misguided. After briefly comparing the meta-philosophy of Common Sense and the meta-philosophy of economy, I show that the core motivation in favour of Realism relies in fact in a principle of economy which violates the methodology of Common (...) Sense. I conclude that Common Sense philosophers should endorse Nominalism. (shrink)

Pendant cinq siecles, de 300 av. J.C. jusqu'au crepuscule de Marc Aurele, la philosophie stoicienne domina la culture antique. Encore aujourd'hui, notre grammaire, notre logique et notre linguistique sont les heritieres plus ou moins conscientes de l'une des trois parties de cette philosophie, la dialectique, qui fut, dans sa forme classique, l'oeuvre de Chrysippe (280-204 av. J.C.). Ce livre est la premiere reconstruction synthetique de la dialectique stoicienne dans son ensemble. Son point de vue est en outre entierement nouveau. En (...) effet, pour l'auteur, les stoiciens n'avaient pas une logique au sens moderne du terme, mais une dialectique, c'est-a-dire une technique de l'argumentation dialoguee. Sa conception complexe, a premiere vue multiple et equivoque, recoit ainsi un eclairage inedit, qui permet de comprendre son originalite et d'en reinterpreter la place dans l'ensemble du systeme. Cela nous permet aussi de mieux comprendre le sens des disciplines qui en sont les heritieres infideles. (shrink)

La compréhension du siècle des Lumières passe par la lecture de cette oeuvre, qui jette dès 1737 le discrédit sur la bonne nature de la raison. On y lit le désaveu des Lumières par elles-mêmes, désaveu qui signe peut-être leur véritable et paradoxal triomphe.

Toujours, dans toute proposition affirmative veritable, necessaire ou contingente, universelle ou singuliere, la notion du predicat est comprise en quelque facon dans celle du sujet, praedicatum inest subjecto, ou bien je ne sais ce que c'est que la vetite. Parce qu'elles mettaient principalement l'accent sur les liaisons conceptuelles, les precisions de ce genre ont ete interpretees comme autant d'indices permettant de reconstituer le contenu du predicat de verite a partir de presupposes coherentistes. Dans le concensus qui s'est etabli sur ce (...) point, le role hermeneutique tres excessif accorde a la notion de systeme a eu une portee aussi considerable que le contenu des quelques textes generalement allegues. Si on admet, au contraire, qu'il y a bien une doctrine leibnizienne de la verite, alors on est amene a inscrire la position de Leibniz dans le contexte du debat relatif a l'adaequatio rei et a souligner davantage ce qui l'apparente a une theorie de la verite-correspondance. Cet argument principal est soutenu par des analyses de detail dans la logique. Un attention particuliere est apportee aux valeurs des variables du nouveau calcul, a la fonction du predicat de possibilite, au probleme relatif a la constantia subjecti et au statut des entites intensionnelles. L'image de l'ontologie leibnizienne s'en trouve modifiee et precisee: a la fois possibiliste et factualiste, elle est traversee de tensions importantes et occupe une place tout a fait singuliere dans cette partie de la philosophie qui connait aujourd'hui un si profond renouveau. There are three families of solutions to the traditional Amputation Paradox: Eliminativism, Contingent Identity Theories, and Theories of Coincident Entities. Theories of Coincident Entities challenge our common understanding of the relation between identity and parthood, since they accept that two things can be mereologically coincident without being identical. The contemporary discussion of the Amputation Paradox tends to mention only one theory of Coincident Entities, namely the Constitution View, which violates the mereological principle of Extensionality. But in fact, there is another (...) theory, namely the Unique Part View, which violates another mereological principle. In this paper, I argue that the contemporary focus on the Constitution View is unmotivated, at least when we are confronted with the Amputation Paradox, and that a balanced comparison of the two views should favour the Unique Part View. Le monde francophone, espace de circulation de savoirs et de leurs détenteurs, constitue un milieu propice à ces dynamiques originales. Pour les réaliser, une politique éclairée et une gestion stratégique fine sont requises. La première a débuté avec succès; la seconde est maintenant indispensable.Expatriate diasporas of intellectuals that are emerging today as an answer to the (...) brain drain from the South to the North are shaping a new and promising though demanding policy option. The French speaking world, an area of in which knowledge and intellectuals circulate, is thus a favourable milieu for these original dynamics. To develop these dynamics an enlightened policy and good strategic management are required , The former has already started successfully but the latter remains essential. (shrink)

Any philosopher who defends Free Will should have an answer to the epistemological question: “how do we know that we have such a capacity?” A traditional answer to this question is that we have some form of introspective access to our own Free Will. In recent times though, many philosophers have considered any such introspectionist theory as so obviously wrong that it hardly needs discussion, especially when Free Will is understood in libertarian terms. One of the rare objections to appear (...) as an explicit argument was proposed by van Inwagen in his Essay on Free Will. In this paper, I address van Inwagen’s anti-introspection argument; I argue that it is both inconsistent with his overall treatment of the Existence Question (namely, with his defence of the existence of Free Will from reflections about morality), and inconclusive in itself (at least for anyone not ready to endorse general scepticism about perception). In passing, I give a clarification of the notion of Introspection, in the case of Freedom, that also sets a more favourable stage for the evaluation of further objections. (shrink)

Jean de Jandun (ca. 1285/1328), maître es arts à l'Université de Paris durant la première moitié du quatorzième siècle, est considéré par l'historiographie contemporaine comme le principal tenant de l'"averroi͏̈sme latin", c'est-à-dire comme le défenseur majeur d'une psychologie extrême dans laquelle l'intellect est unique, éternel, et séparé par essence des hommes. Sa noétique procède en réalité d'une réarticulation ou d'une reprise active du corpus latin d'Averroès et l'on étudie sur trois plans (le rapport au corps, l'intervention de l'image, la (...) production de la pensée) comment elle s'élabore et chemine à l'écart du Grand Commentaire sur le De anima laissé par le Cordouan. La notion de subiectum sert de fil directeur, elle vaut chez Averroès à la fois pour l'intellect sujet-substrat des intelligibles et pour le phantasme qui sert de base à la formation du concept. On décrit donc quels "transferts du sujet" s'opèrent dans la relance de la noétique rushdienne, pour relever des glissements et finalement pointer la mise en place de problématiques nouvelles et constitutives, aussi, de notre modernité. Car, en reconnaissant à l'"averroi͏̈sme" une production réellement philosophique qu'on tendait à lui refuser, on fait apparaître combien l'oeuvre de Jean est solidaire de l'invention ou de l'accentuation d'une question capitale dont nous sommes héritiers : celle du sujet humain des pensées, celle de l'assomption de l'homme comme sujet.
