Preschoolers Favor Their Ingroup When Resources Are Limited.Kristy Jia Jin Lee, Gianluca Esposito & Peipei Setoh - 2018 - Frontiers in Psychology 9:398351.
The present study examined how two- to four-year-old preschoolers in Singapore (N = 202) balance fairness and ingroup loyalty in resource distribution. Specifically, we investigated whether children would enact fair distributions as defined by an equality rule, or show partiality toward their ingroup when distributing resources, and the conditions under which one distributive strategy may take precedence over the other. In Experiment 1, children distributed four different pairs of toys between two puppets. In the Group condition, one puppet was assigned (...)

This study aims to open a critical scenario on the current paradigm of reference for teaching sports techniques by pointing to a methodological perspective that is more in keeping with the theoretical reference framework of the ecological-dynamic approach. Currently, the Constraints-led Approach is considered very useful for teaching sports techniques; however, the transition from pure theory to practice is not so simple and consistent with the heuristic learning paradigm. The purpose is to highlight, starting from the theoretical lines, the methodological (...)

Academic engagement describes students’ involvement in academic learning and achievement. This paper reports the psychometric properties of the University Student Engagement Inventory (USEI) with a sample of 3992 university students from nine different countries and regions from Europe, North and South America, Africa, and Asia. The USEI operationalizes a trifactorial conceptualization of academic engagement (behavioral, emotional and cognitive). Construct validity was assessed by means of confirmatory factor analysis and reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega coefficients. Weak measurement (...)

Beyond a gut feeling: How the immune system impacts the effect of gut microbiota in neurodevelopment.Atiqah Azhari, Farouq Azizan & Gianluca Esposito - 2019 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 42.
Hooks et al. posit that gastrointestinal microbes alter the end state of development indirectly. Here, we present the immune system as the link that facilitates communication between the gut and the brain. Illustrating the case of autism spectrum disorder, we explicate the role of the immune system in responding to microbial dysbiosis by inducing an inflammatory state that affects neurodevelopment. We propose two models: directly, within the infant, and indirectly, via maternal and infant systems.

Gene × Environment Interaction in Developmental Disorders: Where Do We Stand and What’s Next?Gianluca Esposito, Atiqah Azhari & Jessica L. Borelli - 2018 - Frontiers in Psychology 9:394502.
Although the field of psychiatry has witnessed the proliferation of studies on Gene x Environment (GxE) interactions, still limited is the knowledge we possess of GxE interactions regarding developmental disorders. In this perspective paper, we discuss why GxE interaction studies are needed to broaden our knowledge of developmental disorders. We also discuss the different roles of hazardous versus self-generated environmental factors and how these types of factors may differentially engage with an individual’s genetic background in predicting a resulting phenotype. Then, (...)

On the Occurrence of Mass in Field Theory.Giampiero Esposito - 2002 - Foundations of Physics 32 (9):1459-1483.
This paper proves that it is possible to build a Lagrangian for quantum electrodynamics which makes it explicit that the photon mass is eventually set to zero in the physical part on observational ground. Gauge independence is achieved upon considering the joint effect of gauge-averaging term and ghost fields. It remains possible to obtain a counterterm Lagrangian where the only non-gauge-invariant term is proportional to the squared divergence of the potential, while the photon propagator in momentum space falls off like (...)

Pseudomentalization as a Challenge for Therapists of Group Psychotherapy With Drug Addicted Patients.Giovanna Esposito, Silvia Formentin, Cristina Marogna, Vito Sava, Raffaella Passeggia & Sigmund W. Karterud - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
One of the main challenges in group therapy with drug-addicted patients is collective pseudomentalization, i.e., a group discourse consisting of words and clichés that are decoupled from any inner emotional life and are poorly related to external reality. In this study, we aimed to explore the phenomenology of pseudomentalization and how it was addressed by the therapist in an outpatient group for drug-addicted patients. The group was composed of seven members, and the transcripts of eight audio-recorded sessions were rated and (...)

Paradigma Pachamama.

An Analysis of the Generalizability and Stability of the Halo Effect During the COVID-19 Pandemic Outbreak.Giulio Gabrieli, Albert Lee, Peipei Setoh & Gianluca Esposito - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
The influence on the global evaluation of a person based on the perception of a single trait is a phenomenon widely investigated in social psychology. Widely regarded as Halo effect, this phenomenon has been studied for more than 100 years now, and findings such as the relationship between aesthetic perception and other personality traits—such as competence and trustworthiness—have since been uncovered. Trustworthiness plays an especially crucial role in individuals' social interactions. Despite the large body of literature published on the Halo (...)

Bio-culturally grounded: why separation and connection may not be the same around the world.Albert Lee & Gianluca Esposito - 2021 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 44.
Central to the account of grounded procedures is the premise that mental experiences are grounded in physical actions. We complement this account by incorporating frameworks in cultural psychology and developmental neuroscience, with new predictions. Through the examples of vicarious experiences and demerit transfer, we discuss why, and how, separation and connection may operate somewhat differently across cultures.

To be or not to be emotionally aware and socially motivated: How alexithymia impacts autism spectrum disorders.Luigi Pastore, Sara Dellantonio, Claudio Mulatti & Gianluca Esposito - 2019 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 42.
Autism often co-occurs with alexithymia, a condition characterized by no or diminished awareness of emotions that significantly impacts an individual's social relationships. We investigate how the social motivation of autistics would be eroded by comorbidity with alexithymia and why this diminished motivation would be difficult for non-autistic people to perceive and reciprocate.
