The shifting sands of creative thinking: Connections to dual-process theory.Paul T. Sowden, Andrew Pringle & Liane Gabora - 2015 - Thinking and Reasoning 21 (1):40-60.
Dual-process models of cognition suggest that there are two types of thought: autonomous Type 1 processes and working memory dependent Type 2 processes that support hypothetical thinking. Models of creative thinking also distinguish between two sets of thinking processes: those involved in the generation of ideas and those involved with their refinement, evaluation, and/or selection. Here we review dual-process models in both these literatures and delineate the similarities and differences. Both generative creative processing and evaluative creative processing involve elements that (...)

    Sorge, Heideggerian Ethic of Care: Creating More Caring Organizations.Margie J. Elley-Brown & Judith K. Pringle - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 168 (1):23-35.
Recently ethical implications of human resource management have intensified the focus on care perspectives in management and organization studies. Appeals have also been made for the concept of organizational care to be grounded in philosophies of care rather than business theories. Care perspectives see individuals, especially women, as primarily relational and view work as a means by which people can increase in self-esteem, self-develop and be fulfilled. The ethic of care has received attention in feminist ethics and is often socially (...)

    The Unprecedented Lead-Poisoning Outbreak: Ethical Issues in a Troubling Broader Context.John D. Pringle - 2014 - Public Health Ethics 7 (3):301-305.
This article is in response to Wurr and Cooney’s Case Discussion entitled ‘Ethical dilemmas in population-level treatment of lead poisoning in Zamfara State, Nigeria’. The Case Discussion draws attention to Médecins Sans Frontières’ (MSF’s) remarkable achievement of providing the world’s first population-level treatment for severe lead poisoning. Wurr and Cooney raise two key ethical issues: treatment in the face of ongoing exposure, and withdrawal from program. Having participated in the emergency response to the lead-poisoning outbreak, I reflect on the Case (...)

  28. Causation and the Grounds of Freedom. [REVIEW]Ann Whittle - 2018 - Teorema: International Journal of Philosophy 36:61-76.
In this paper, I take a critical look at Sartorio’s book Causation and Free Will (2016). Sartorio offers a rich defence of an actual-sequence view of freedom, which pays close attention to issues in the philosophy of causation and how they relate to freedom. I argue that although this focus on causation is illuminating, Sartorio’s project nevertheless runs into some serious difficulties. Perhaps most worrying amongst them is whether the agent-based reason-sensitivity account, offered by Sartorio, is consistent with Frankfurt-style cases (...)

'Aqaba Castle in the Ottoman Period, 1517-1917.Denys Pringle - 2009 - In A. Peacock (ed.), The Frontiers of the Ottoman World. pp. 95.
For most of the period during which 'Aqaba belonged to the Ottoman Empire, the precise nature of its frontier status needs to be nuanced, since, in theory at least, all of the provinces adjoining it formed part of the same political unit, and the Red Sea itself was a largely Ottoman lake. In practice, however, Ottoman political and military control in the Syrian and Arabian deserts was often tenuous and reliant on individual deals struck with Bedouin leaders, often within the (...)

    Women in Political Thought.Helen Pringle - 1993 - Hypatia 8 (3):136 - 159.
The argument of this paper is that texts in the history of political thought are rather more loquacious on the question of women than has often been supposed. The argument is developed using examples from Plato's Republic, notably the sections on injustice and tyranny. The paper concludes by suggesting the general implications of its approach for the concerns and style of political theory, particularly as to the importance of understanding symbolic and mythic elements in works of political thought.

Real‐time Responsiveness for Ethics Oversight During Disaster Research.Lisa Eckenwiler, John Pringle, Renaud Boulanger & Matthew Hunt - 2015 - Bioethics 29 (9):653-661.
Disaster research has grown in scope and frequency. Research in the wake of disasters and during humanitarian crises – particularly in resource-poor settings – is likely to raise profound and unique ethical challenges for local communities, crisis responders, researchers, and research ethics committees. Given the ethical challenges, many have questioned how best to provide research ethics review and oversight. We contribute to the conversation concerning how best to ensure appropriate ethical oversight in disaster research and argue that ethical disaster research (...)

This long-awaited two-volume set constitutes the definitive presentation of the system of classifying moral judgment built up by Lawrence Kohlberg and his associates over a period of twenty years. Researchers in child development and education around the world, many of whom have worked with interim versions of the system, indeed, all those seriously interested in understanding the problem of moral judgment, will find it an indispensable resource. Volume I reviews Kohlberg's stage theory, and the by-now large body of research on (...)

Concepts and Cases in Nursing Ethics, Second Edition.Michael Yeo & Anne Moorhouse (eds.) - 1996 - Peterborough, CA: Broadview Press.
Concepts and Cases in Nursing Ethics maps the ethical landscape of contemporary nursing. The book is the product of a collaboration between philosopher-ethicist Michael Yeo, nurse-ethicist Anne Moorhouse, and six representatives of various areas of professional nursing. It thus combines philosophical and ethical analysis with nursing knowledge and experience in a manner that is both understandable and relevant. The book is organized around six main concepts in nursing ethics: beneficence, autonomy, confidentiality, truth-telling, justice, and integrity. A chapter is devoted (...)

The Problem of Evil: An Intercultural Exploration.Sandra Ann Wawrytko (ed.) - 2000 - Brill | Rodopi.
This book is an intercultural exploration of the full scope of evil. The problems of evil have beset humanity throughout the ages and continue to trouble us. The studies here examine evil in Asian thought, in Western theory, in the cosmic order, in human psychology, and in social practice. Insights are added to the philosophical discussions from religion, culture, history, law, technology, and literature.
