Recent arguments claim that behavioral science has focused – to its detriment – on the individual over the system when construing behavioral interventions. In this commentary, we argue that tackling economic inequality using both framings in tandem is invaluable. By studying individuals who have overcome inequality, “positive deviants,” and the system limitations they navigate, we offer potentially greater policy solutions.

A partir de l’étude d’un corpus de travaux de géographes en français et en anglais depuis les années 1990, l’article est consacré à la manière dont les études géographiques portant sur les espaces dits des Suds, entendus comme faisant partie des pays dominés à l’échelle mondiale, intègrent la notion de mondialisation. Le constat de la faible prise en compte des pays des Suds dans les études portant sur la mondialisation est d’abord établi. En réaction, nombre de géographes concernés ont intégré (...) cette dimension dans leurs travaux pour montrer ce qu’était la mondialisation depuis les Suds et qu’il s’agissait d’un phénomène bien réel dont ils n’étaient pas exclus. Les travaux sont souvent orientés idéologiquement, les uns développant des approches critiques de la mondialisation, dans la filiation d’études marxistes et tiers-mondistes, les autres insistant au contraire sur les conséquences bénéfiques de la mondialisation pour les pays des Suds. La plupart convergent cependant pour considérer que la mondialisation accentue les inégalités sociales et spatiales, assertion qui est ici à la fois considérée puis soumise à discussion. (shrink)

Este artículo revisa la situación de la teoría filosófica del conocimiento en la segunda mitad del siglo XX y el aporte de L. Polo a la misma. Se considera la importancia del aporte de L. Polo al realismo gnoseológico que se ha ido abriendo paso en esta época postmoderna, después de los excesos del criticismo inmanentista moderno. Se destacan dos aspectos relevantes de la teoría del conocimiento de L. Polo: a) su propuesta de una versión realista, no husserliana-cartesiana, de la (...) intencionalidad cognitiva como intencionalidad del objeto respecto a la realidad objetivada y no como relación del acto al objeto, y b) su aporte a la superación del criticismo inmenentista moderno mediante la identificación y revisión de sus orígenes tardomedievales en el representacionismo semántico de Ockham y en el representacionismo especulativo de Duns Escoto. At present, the uneasiness at work of social workers and more specifically that of specialized educators is becoming a major and central problem. How can we analyse the appearance and installation of wear at work of specialist educators? Would the uneasiness expressed not be a revelation of a transformation of professional identity? What functions do complaints and resentments fulfil from the point of view of the identity building and transaction process?

Clinical ethics consultants respond to a multitude of issues, ranging from the cognitive to the emotional. As such, ethics consultants must be prepared to analyze as well as empathize. And yet, there remains a paucity of research and training on the interpersonal and emotional aspects of clinical ethics consultations—the so-called skills in “advanced ethics facilitation.” This article is a contribution to the need for further understanding and practical knowledge in the emotional aspects of ethics consultation. In physics, mass is a property of matter that describes how material elements are arranged in space and opposed to forces, and also how they generate forces such as gravitation forces. Electric charge remains enigmatic. This charge is a universal constant, and it is discrete rather than continuous. Spin can be interpreted as a reversal movement that allows the outer side of matter to fold back on itself. Finally, Maxwell's theory on the propagation of light also belongs to the physics (...) of information. Relativistic cosmology does not easily lend itself to an interpretation that reveals the dynamics of communication. It is conceived in its principle as a physics of arrangements. Einstein completes modern physics, where "completes" must be considered in a broad sense. One of the key questions concerns the link between mathematics and physical things or, in other words, what is represented and "what is" or "happens" in the world. (shrink)

This chapter provides a few approaches aiming to review the interpretation of matter, nature and the universe by trying to reframe the physical sciences in the context that has taken shape: arrangement, communication and information. In relation to what has just been presented, action regards more a mechanical type of physics with forces, arrangement, movements and orientations. Rational mechanics is the result. The existence of the two types of physics is associated with two great scientists. First of all, Galileo, who (...) established the principle of relativity and the addition of velocities by perfecting mathematical physics. Second, Planck, who elaborated the famous formula “E = hv” to account for blackbody radiation. If the distinction between a physics of communication and a physics of arrangement is applicable, then it must be validated in quantum theory and the description of the universe. Classical mechanics and relativistic cosmology describe arrangements of matter. Quantum physics describes communications. (shrink)

In this chapter, the issue of information will be tackled from a "pathological" point of view, by considering living cells that have become cancerous and societies permeated by "psychological imbalances". The chapter focuses on the issue of fanaticism, whose cause is evidently related to the way of interpreting the world. The issue will revolve around immunity, identity, forms and communication. The chapter also considers some perspicacious analyses published in the 1960s by Jurgen Habermas. This unmissable philosopher has managed to shed (...) light on how science and technology have become ideologies, leading to societies guided by scientific modernism with two complementary aspects. The first one involves action as determined by the use of technological tools. The second one involves thinking, human conscience, and the sense of existence which, in the context of scientific modernism, are determined or at least guided by the use of technological tools and procedures founded on measuring and calculating science. This chapter focuses on the study of contemporary physics, and follows the philosophical path in order to conceive the universal principle of the ontological difference between form and Content. The distinction between "form" and "content" is fairly recent. It started with medieval philosophy, which separated substance from accidents and essence from existence, while also conceiving substance no longer as an ontological substratum in an Aristotelian sense, but as an underlying thing. Equating on an ontological level Being and Content as opposed (...) to form leads us back to lines of inquiry investigated in ancient times. Beatitude, truth and power represent a trinity shedding light on a path that allows us to move toward considerations about Christian ontology, which is also associated with Being and Content. The chapter also aims to establish a relationship between the oblivion of Content and the oblivion of Time. (shrink)

Formulating quantum gravity is the greatest challenge that 21st century physics must address. If quantum physics refuses to blend with general relativity, it may be that relativity does not represent a good description of the universe in line with gravity and all its effects. This opens a path for us: first understanding quantum physics and what it reveals about nature and then analyzing the boundaries of relativistic cosmology and reconsidering the whole matter. Physicists consider entanglement as a fundamental property derived (...) from quantum mechanics, which is a physics of communication. The involvement of quantum computing shows that the entanglement/geometry duality works by employing a "quantum algorithm" that corrects the information. Most physical theories make use of gauges. Gauges give us evidence about two things: how the cosmos is organized; and why and how nature is "captured" by mathematical theories, opening a line of inquiry about the relationship between man and the universe. This chapter leads the readers from technology and philosophy to biology and sociology on the basis of the notion of information as well as communication, aims to make clear. The paradigm of Information concerns all the branches of physics and plays a prominent role in quantum dynamics as well as cosmology, interpreting Gravity as the uncovering of an informational order in the universe. In the chapter, Information with a capital I represents an issue of a cultural and political order faced (...) by the 21st Century, besides constituting a philosophical challenge. The philosophy of Information completes the philosophy of Technology. Men have to determine two essential components, namely technological activity and the conscience emerging with inputs of information that organizes itself and is reflected. To conclude the general presentation of a "philosophical path" for the 21st Century, the chapter discusses the fundamental structure that links Technology and Information while also distinguishing between them. Many complex systems, like biologic ones, cannot be understood with reductionist and analytic methods which are based upon an aristotelian logic with two values, false and true; in the past, mathematicians and philosophers have developed alternative logics, and the philosopher Stéphane Lupasco proposed a dynamic logic named logic of contradictory statements, with three values, potential, actual, and T which represents a mediate position between actual state and potential state, moreover, dynamics is introduced in form of a logical movement from potential (...) to actual, which can be reversed; last but not least, this logic presents a correlation with metaphysical concepts like involution/evolution dualism proposed by Aurobindo, implicate/explicate order proposed by the physician David Bohm, and hegelian synthesis.In this paper, we propose to describe biological systems with a general model derived from this logic, and propose that dynamics of such systems can be represented by use of (i) discontinuities which propagate, and (ii) organizing centres, so, two kinds of propagation can be involved; we propose to name actualization waves the discontinuities which propagate from centers toward periphery, and potentialization waves the ones which propagate from periphery toward centers (see fig. 1 and 2). ABSTRACTAccording to many governments and educationalists, education should aim to develop dispositions conducive to political participation and solidarity, because democratic citizenship presupposes participation and solidarity. But there are radically different views on the nature of good citizenship. We examine the implications of this dissensus for citizenship education. Education, we contend, should involve and develop autonomy and open-mindedness. We argue that this requires a more critical approach than is possible when political participation and solidarity are conceived of as goals of education.

Depuis une vingtaine d'années, on assiste en France à un vaste mouvement d'initiatives féminines citoyennes que l'on peut qualifier d'espaces de médiation. Leur point commun est de créer, souvent en partenariat avec les collectivités locales, des espaces de proximité visant à résoudre les problèmes vécus au quotidien par les femmes et leurs familles. À partir d'exemples concrets, nous montrons que ces espaces de proximité sont susceptibles d'aider les femmes à acquérir une certaine autonomie à condition qu'ils reposent sur une double (...) médiation: médiation entre les pôles de l'individuel et le collectif, ce qui permet à chacune d'être reconnue dans sa singularité tout en appartenant à un collectif; médiation entre l'intérêt collectif du groupe et l'intérêt général, le groupe devenant ainsi une sorte d'intermédiaire vers la société civile.A vast movement of citizen-based initiatives led by women has emerged in France over the last twenty years or so and these can be qualified as providing mediation programmes. These projects are often run in partnership with local governments and generally have in common the fact that they are community initiatives aimed at helping women and their families solve day-to-day problems. Using real examples, we show that these community programmes can help women acquire a certain autonomy as long as they are based on a dual mediation, firstly mediation between poles of the individual and the collective and secondly mediation between the collective interest of the group and the general interest, the group thus acting as a sort of intermediary towards society as a whole. Human beings adapt the spontaneous pace of their actions to interact with the environment. Yet, the nature of the mechanism enabling such adaptive behavior remains poorly understood. The aim of the present contribution was to examine the role of attention in motor timing using time series analysis, and a dual task paradigm. In a series of two studies, a finger-tapping task was used in sensorimotor synchronization with various tempi and motor complexity. Time series analyzes indicated that two different timing strategies (...) were used depending on the speed constraints. At slow tempi, tapping sequences were characterized by strong negative autocorrelations, suggesting the implication of cognitive predictive timing. When moving at fast and close-to-spontaneous tempi, tapping sequences were characterized by less negative autocorrelations, suggesting that timing properties emerged from body movement dynamics. The analysis of the dual-task reaction times confirmed that both the temporal and spatial constraints impacted the attentional resources allocated to the finger-tapping tasks. Overall, our work suggests that moving fast and slow involve distinct timing strategies that are characterized by contrasting attentional demands. (shrink)

Plusieurs années de recherche en Inde rurale du Sud (Tamil Nadu) montrent que le microcrédit a surtout pour effet de renforcer une « démocratie de patronage ». La dette, sous toutes ses formes, reste un puissant moteur de paupérisation des travailleurs pauvres (...) mais aussi de construction des identités individuelles et collectives et de différentiation sociale. Il tient tout entier, semble-t-il, dans la découverte - qui vaut invention - de la fécondité du principe : la pensée élaborée, en effet, aperçoit d'un même mouvement l'homogénéité du principe et de la fin, d'une part, l'homologie entre la pensée et l'Être, (...) d'autre part. À un niveau plus profond, la transcendance de la méthode par rapport à ses règles conduit, dans un premier temps, à l'identifier avec la philosophie elle-même - appréhendée ici comme « commentaire de son principe » - dans un second temps à marquer, sous le rapport du modèle, la différence entre la philosophie et les sciences.As far as the literal meaning is concerned, this study can be read as a reflection on the concept of the method. The perusal of Descartes's texts allows to bring out the characteristics of the method , but especially what may be called its "spirit". It entirely lies, so it seems, in the discovery - which is as good as invention - of the potential of the principle : indeed, elaborate thought straightaway perceives the homogeneity of the principle and of the end, on the one hand, the homology between thought and Being, on the other hand. As far as the hidden meaning is concerned, the transcendence of the method with regard to its rules leads first to identify it with philosophy itself - in this instance considered as a "commentary on its principle" - subsequently to lay stress, from the point of view of the model, on the difference between philosophy and sciences. Dans cet article, nous présentons le corpus « Multicultural Paris French » (MPF), en en montrant les enjeux théoriques et méthodologiques, ainsi que quelques directions d’exploitation. En visant des données non-standard illustrant ce qu’il est de coutume d’appeler « parler jeune », MPF repose sur une réflexion quant à la façon d’appréhender les situations propices à leur émergence, au-delà d’informations généralement retenues, d’ordres sociodémographiques ou ethniques, ou du degré de formalisme de l’échange. Si ces considérations ne sont évidemment pas évacuées, (...) elles sont combinées à d’autres qui concernent les effets de la relation entre locuteurs au moment de l’enregistrement. De ce fait, MPF apparaît comme un corpus original dans le champ des corpus de français parlé contemporain, tant du point de vue de la nature des données recueillies que de celui du traitement rendu possible par cette spécificité. The origin of Modernity is a problem often neglected in current debate, and several landmarks are often suggested, such as the new science, the Renaissance, Descartes philosophical approach or the Illustration. In this paper it is suggested that the roots of Modernity could pre-date those conventional landmarks, and could be found in the great political and cultural conflicts that occurred in Europe in the Low Middle Age.

Open peer commentary on the article “A Computational Constructivist Model as an Anticipatory Learning Mechanism for Coupled Agent–Environment Systems” by Filipo Studzinski Perotto. Upshot: Constructivist theory gives a nice high-level account of how knowledge can be autonomously developed by an agent interacting with an environment, but it fails to detail the mechanisms needed to bridge the gap between low levels of sensorimotor data and higher levels of cognition. AI workers are trying to bridge this gap, using task-specific engineering approaches, without (...) any principled theory to guide them; they could use help from psychologists. (shrink)

Over recent years, the research community has been increasingly using preprint servers to share manuscripts that are not yet peer-reviewed. Even if it enables quick dissemination of research findings, this practice raises several challenges in publication ethics and integrity. In particular, preprints have become an important source of information for stakeholders interested in COVID19 research developments, including traditional media, social media, and policy makers. Despite caveats about their nature, many users can still confuse pre-prints with peer-reviewed manuscripts. If unconfirmed but (...) already widely shared first-draft results later prove wrong or misinterpreted, it can be very difficult to “unlearn” what we thought was true. Complexity further increases if unconfirmed findings have been used to inform guidelines. To help achieve a balance between early access to research findings and its negative consequences, we formulated five recommendations: (a) consensus should be sought on a term clearer than ‘pre-print’, such as ‘Unrefereed manuscript’, “Manuscript awaiting peer review” or ‘’Non-reviewed manuscript”; (b) Caveats about unrefereed manuscripts should be prominent on their first page, and each page should include a red watermark stating ‘Caution—Not Peer Reviewed’; (c) pre-print authors should certify that their manuscript will be submitted to a peer-review journal, and should regularly update the manuscript status; (d) high level consultations should be convened, to formulate clear principles and policies for the publication and dissemination of non-peer reviewed research results; (e) in the longer term, an international initiative to certify servers that comply with good practices could be envisaged. Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) reviewers often provide similar feedback across applications, which suggests that the problem lies in researcher awareness of key issues rather than novel, unsolvable challenges. If common problems can be addressed before lodgement by applicants referencing clear evidence-based supports (e.g., FAQs on common application shortcomings), it would improve efficiency for HREC members and expedite approvals. We aim to inform such supports by analysing the patterns in the most frequent feedback made by HREC members during review processes. (...) We collected every instance (N = 4,195) of feedback made on N = 197 ‘low-risk’ protocols by all HREC staff (N = 16) at one institution over the course of a full year (2019). Reflexive thematic analysis to identify themes (and content analysis to determine relative frequency) revealed that the top three themes are consistent with existing literature: Consent, Administrative, and Methodological concerns. However, we identified important new themes that are not captured in previous research, including ‘Risk to Researchers’, ‘Commercial benefit, scope and scale’, ‘Diversity’ (covering issues of cultural sensitivity, language and accessibility), as well as fair right to a complaints process. Our thorough exploration of information-rich primary data marks an important methodological improvement over previous studies and offers a theoretical contribution to understanding themes that have heretofore been overlooked in the ethics review process. By identifying the common challenges experienced in HREC review we can better inform tailored supports to applicants (by extension reducing workload burdens on HREC systems) and reduce their perceived barriers to engaging in challenging but meaningful research. Clinical ethics consultants provide a range of services in hospital settings and in teaching environments. Training to achieve the skills needed to meet the expectations of employers comes in various forms, ranging from on-the-job training to formal fellowship training programs. We surveyed graduates of clinical ethics fellowships to evaluate their self-reported preparedness for their first job after fellowship training. The results indicated several areas of need, including greater exposure to program-building skills, quality improvement skills, and approaches to working with members (...) of higher administration. These data will be of use to educators as well as to fellows who advocate for elements of training in preparation for their first position. (shrink)

Policy-makers use different decision-making strategies and base their decisions – more or less explicitly – on both expert knowledge and opinions in order to cope with the sheer complexity of societal challenges and the political environment. Most politicians rely to some extent on personal ideology in the implementation of public policies. Potential decision biases such as ‘repair service behavior’ – the human tendency to try fixing what appears to be most problematic at first – also influence decision-making. While ideology plays (...) a prominent role in politics, we know too little about its effect on political decision-making. Some researchers would argue that the use of ideology and repair service behavior facilitate the decision process, while others suggest that it adversely affects the ability to make objective decisions. Using a political microworld simulation that reproduces complex real-world problems, we investigate the effects of repair service behavior and personal ideology on performance in a dynamic decision-making task. Although repair service behavior was not associated with performance, the results suggest that personal ideology significantly impaired goal attainment. Despite clear instructions to be as objective as possible and think critically in completing the task, ideology was powerful enough to disrupt objective policy-making, as indicated by the deviation from optimal scores and the overall microworld task goal, i.e., to win votes and be re-elected by the end of the game.
