Fallen Angels or Rising Beasts? Theological Perspectives on Human Uniqueness

Abstract

Are human beings bearers of the divine as the Christian understanding of the imago Dei suggests? Or, are we merely rational animals, as a scientific assessment suggests? In this article, I contend that both theological and scientific explanations complement each other. Biological evolution has led to emergent qualities that have given rise to intelligence and the human creation of culture, science, and religion
