Abstract

In a practical follow-up to his Refusing to Be a Man (also now out in a second edition), feminist writer Stoltenberg explains to men how the social construction of manhood operates in ordinary relationships. He uses a variety of stories and illustrations to make sense of interpersonal conflicts and internal dilemmas that distress men's lives, and to show how the same dynamics drive the behavior of gangs, race-hate groups, and other warring male factions. In a new introduction to the 1993 original, subtitled A Book for Men of Conscience, he sets out the academic context and summarizes the underlying game theory of gender.
