Abstract

Sports autobiographies in general have been a neglected resource in sports research despite their potential to offer a rich source of data, with analytical attention to the autobiographies of sportswomen particularly scarce. This chapter seeks to make two important contributions. First, it advocates the use of autobiographies as a valuable resource for feminist scholarship in sport. Second, via an illustrative case study of cyclist Nicole Cooke’s autobiography The Breakaway a nuanced analysis of contemporary feminist positions is used to bring discussions of feminist theory to the fore. Insight is given to the impact stories containing “trouble” might have for a feminist agenda.
