Abstract

The latest book by philosopher Heller, entitled “The value of chance. My life” represents a fascinating itinerary of European history of the twentieth century, reflected in her tormented and free existence, lived in the elective affinity with the many friends, colleagues, teachers, and philosophers that she was lucky enough to meet. And yet, from a more careful reading of this autobiography, a special person, a mentor and a guide, a real support stands out from the first pages, and remembered up to the last line: this is the figure of her father Pál Heller, born in Vienna in 1888 and died in Auschwitz in 1945, who will be the cornerstone of her life and philosophy.
