Abstract

Il saggio ricostruisce a grandi linee la storia semantica del concetto di identità. Quando fu utilizzato dalle scienze sociali, servì a rappresentare in termini nuovi il rapporto inividuo/società. Dagli anni sessanta i sociologi hanno sottolineato il suo carattere socialmente costruito, e attivisti dei movimenti nazionalisti e femministi hanno sostenuto la natura fissa, unitaria, essenzialista delle identità collettive. La concezione primordialista dell’identità, sostenuta dai conflitti etnici degli anni ottanta e novanta, è stata contestata dalle critiche del pensiero postmoderno. In seguito all’influenza del post-strutturalismo, il sé è stato concepito come mera illusione linguistica. Perciò molti studiosi pensano che l’identità sia troppo ambigua, troppo divisa tra ‘essenza’ e ‘finzione’ per rispondere efficacemente alle domande dell’analisi sociale, e propongono di abolirla dal vocabolario delle scienze sociali. La tesi principale del saggio è, invece, che il concetto di identità sia ancora uno strumento indispensabile della teoria sociale, purché concepito come una categoria analitica con un carattere multidimensionale.The paper outlines the semantic history of the concept of identity.When it came into use as a social-science terme, it was ideally adapted to talking about the relationship of the individual to society in a new way. By the 1960s sociologists emphasized its social constructed character, and activists of cultural nationalist and feminist movements of the 60s and 70s stressed the fixed, unitary, essentialist nature of collective identities. The primordialist conceptione of identity, supported by the ethnic conflicts of the 80s and 90s, was challenged by postmodernist critiques. As a result of the influence of poststructuralism, the self was conceived as a merely a fiction of language. Therefore many scholars think that identity is too ambiguous, too torn between ‘essence’ and ‘fiction’, to serve well the demands of social analysis. They suggest that identity should be written out of the social analysis.On the contrary, the paper’s main thesis is that identity is still an indispensable tool of social theory, provided that it is conceived as an analytical category with a multidimensional character
