Abstract

From Shaw to Joyce to Yeats, modern Irish writers have constructed notions of Irishness that conflict with each other and with the culture and politics of modern Ireland. Simultaneously these authors have been appropriated by an international criticism that sees them primarily as literary modernists or postmodernists. The essays in this volume seek to place these differing versions into the context of current definitions.
