Abstract

A thorough and systematic study of the charters and chanceries of the kings of León-Castilla for the central Middle Ages is one of the essential and unfinished tasks of Spanish medieval studies. Until it is completed, much of the political, ecclesiastical, economic and social history of this area will remain most precariously based. What has been done to date may be described fairly briefly
