Abstract

Daniels’ book is the first full-length study of Thomas Reid’s philosophy published by an American philosopher in almost half a century. Although this Eighteenth-Century Scottish philosopher was an important figure in American philosophy during most of the Nineteenth-Century, there has been scant interest in his doctrines in this century until the last ten years. Daniels’ study is a major addition to the recent publications which have accompanied the reawakened interest in Reid and his Philosophy of Common Sense. It is clear and well written, and enriches the literature on Reid with perspicuous discussions of some of his most interesting doctrines.
