Abstract

This is a reprinted version of Born's 1948 Waynflete Lectures at Oxford; there are several appendices: one elaborates in much greater detail the elements of physical theory developed in the lectures; the second is bibliographical; the last concerns the role of symbols in the construction of physical theory.—P.
