Abstract

The Perspectives section of Ethics & Behavior appears on an occasional basis and is intended to allow the authors to describe, in the first person, an ethical dilemma they have faced through no fault of their own in the course of their careers. Although textbook and academic descriptions of ethical conflicts and solutions are the usual foundation of ethics training, they may obfuscate the very real anguish and turmoil inherent in facing real conflicts. This section allows readers to peek into what it is like to face ethical conflicts, make choices, and live with the consequences through firsthand accounts. In this case, Dr. Newcom describes his response to facing a conflict between his dedication to patient care and changes in role demands at a modern medical school. We invite our readership to submit accounts of their own ethical conundrums for this occasionally published section to Daniel E. Shapiro, PhD, Consulting Editor, Ethics & Behavior, Box 245002, University of Arizona Health Sciences Center, Tucson, AZ, 85724.
