Tradition and Transformation: Diverse Handicraft Businesses in Dingxian in the Modem Period

Abstract

Ding County of Hebei rural handicraft mode of operation for the changes in modern Chinese handicraft production provides an important example. Most of which is to own all of their own labor or hire temporary labor-intensive and cottage industries, small farmers are also co-operated cottage industries, handicrafts and street-style movement system, cottage business employers, as well as Hand workshop management; in the social division of labor, not only preserved the traditional way, also had a factor of progress, reflect a particular historical period, the coexistence of diverse handicraft production horizontal and vertical evolution of progress. It is noteworthy that the farmers of the most important handicrafts - homespun mode of operation adopted by the industry is still the traditional family system, such as weaving did not take Goyang area businessman employer system, which is quite puzzling economic phenomenon. Some important examples for the change of China modem handicraft businesses could be founded in Dingxian, Hebei, most of which were cottage crafts home laborer-based, and a few based on farm cooperative or itinerant workmen, businessman employers and handicraft workshop. Those not only retained the traditional manner, but also had progress factors on the social division of labors which reflected handicraft production of multi-lateral co-exists latitudinally and the progress of evolution longitudinally in a particular historical period. It is worth notice that the local textile industry as the most important handicraft business was still adopted the traditional family system rather than adopting the merchant employer system in Gaoyang and other textile areas, which the economic phenomena is quite difficult to understand
