Abstract

This chapter emphasizes the ethnopsychological factors that influence interaction with language speakers in the field and the considerations that researchers should bear in mind during fieldwork to achieve the desired outcomes. The author describes his personal experience of conducting fieldwork in the Western Pamir. He demonstrates the importance of a sociable and sympathetic approach when identifying a native speaker and establishing working relations with him. He stresses that field researchers should observe accepted ethical standards concerning the cooperation of language consultants and emphasizes the importance of respecting local cultural traditions. In addition, the author remarks that respect for a guest, and concern to please him, is a key factor in the psyche of Pamir inhabitants. It is noteworthy that the outsider may receive unreliable information because for the host it is inadmissible to argue with him or to challenge his opinions.
