Abstract

This work is one of a continuing series of Cambridge Companions to major philosophers that began in the early 1990s with editions on Plato, Descartes, Kant, and Sartre. As with each of the works in the series, the contents are a number of essays by individual authors collected under the guidance of one or several editors, who select the major themes upon which their contributors then write. Each Companion, then, reflects to some extent the predilections of the editor for what these major themes are and who can best distill the philosopher’s work on each theme.
